My name is Tiffany. I am thirty-three years old and I live in Virginia. During the week I am a Registered Nurse and full time Mommy. I enjoy life and spending time with my family and friends.
How long have you been natural? What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
I have been natural for 5 plus years. I really had no interest in going natural. It kind of just happened the day I colored my hair. Relaxers made my hair paper thin but I thought it was the thing to do. By the time I started loving my roller set it was time for regular scheduled routine at the salon. A year and a half ago I decided to do something big….I cut my shoulder length hair off. I continued to make weekly visits to the salon for a wash, blow dry, flat iron, and hair cut/trim to maintain my short hair. August 2012 was my last scheduled cut/trim and the last flat iron. I wanted to enjoy summer vacation with my daughter and family without worrying about getting my hair wet.
My natural hair journey has taught me so much about myself and people. My confidence speaks volumes and I love love love my tightly coiled and kinky texture hair. I wish everyday was a good hair day. In the beginning I was learning and it was all trial and error. I even cried but there was definitely joy and growth in the journey.
What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos?’
I wash and deep condition my hair once a week. Depending on the week and because of my crazy hair obsession I may co-wash in between washes. Prior to cutting off my straight ends (damaged by bleached) I used perm rods faithfully to achieve a curly fro. It was my go to style as I tried to grow it out but the two textures were a deal breaker. Chop chop chop….that moment changed my natural hair experience! Now my go to styles and absolute favorite…twist out and coil out! It has a different look every time.
Through this process I have learned that racism and prejudice still exist. Some people are just mean, make inappropriate comments, they laugh and they stare. My favorite comments and/or questions “Do you comb your hair”, “Are you growing dreads or do you have dreads”, “Did you stick your finger in a electrical outlet”, “Well, I liked your hair better when you wore it like or had it cut like”?
What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I sprits my hair with water morning and night. Apply my favorite oils (extra virgin olive oil, carols daughter elixir or tui oil) and leave in condition. Depending on the style I may retwist or coil and then cover with a satin bonnet.
