Not Your Typical Natural

I am newly natural! When I began, it seemed like a lot of work since I have never really ‘cared’ for my hair on my own. I have always been confined to hair salons for hours a week, trying to achieve a “look” that never looked quite right. A great friend gave me the good advice to start documenting my “hair journey”. So, at the impressionable age of 30. I am beginning a new chapter of self discovery… I am starting with my hair.

Only a YEAR strong, transitioning from a short, lye not dyed and laid to the side fo’ Nia Long look, to a curly, kinky, coily short fro.

“Transitioning” from my short hair was not difficult, since I did not technically have to do a “Big Chop.” My hair was already short, so I thought it would be an easy transition. I did not have the many straight ends and so I figured going from relaxed to natural would be a “piece of cake,” right?!! Little did I know it would be more like a huge wedding cake with all the bells and whistles! J The challenge was not the length; it has been dealing with DRY HAIR.

Dry hair is nothing new to this 4C girl (my hair type, if that matters). Even with a relaxer my course and thick hair was always suffering from brittleness and dryness; especially in the winter months (and I live a cold climate area). So, needless to say, when I began to go grow my hair out naturally, the challenge to keep hair on my head and off the floor was my biggest hurdle.

Where to start? I started by searching out and reading tons of natural hair blogs and natural articles on the web and in magazines that I read like Essence (love their natural love). I also got some word of mouth advice from “natural women” that I love and trust in my personal life. Without a doubt, the first words from all ‘Naturalista’ writers and friends for natural hair success was …MOISTURE. Moisture, moisture, moisture; usually mentioning water (aqua), conditioners/leave- in conditioners and essential oils. “So, what does all this mean and where do I start?” I thought to myself.

Water was the easy part, I had that…. So, I began to venture out and began trying different products.

I didn’t try them all! Because like most of us…I’m a Diva on a Budget.

But there were some I found to be the best for my hair type and they include: Honey-Hemp Conditioner by Oyin, and TRESemme Naturals Moisture Conditioner. I am still exploring products to establish a HG list (Holy Grail), but this is where I am today.

What moisturizing techniques and products are working for you? Any 4C hair diva tips??

I know i’m a type 4 but i’m not sure if its a b or c. but I’ve come to realize heavy cream based conditioning/moisturizing products seems to work better than the lighter based ones. My hair is like sponge it soaks up everything to the point it doesn’t look its wet when you wash it lol. One product that has always been constant in my collection is the shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie. I also have recently tried the tresemmme and i’m mad I haven’t tried it sooner.

If you are like most of us you are a mixture of several different hair ‘types.’ My hair is also low porosity (“doesnt get wet”). I think the best advice I received from a natural hair stylist was to let the water run over my hair for 10 minutes before washing, conditioning, etc. It literally takes that long for my hair to look and feel wet. My hair doesnt react well to curl enhacning smoothie (like the blog author) but I keep trying! LOL. If you would like to see my hair journey you can check it out on YouTube:Global Couture. I will be posting a full feature next month for my 2 year nappiversary. LOL
