Naturally Fierce Feature: Pia

Well my name is Pia Jones. I’m 29. I was born in Germany (dad was military) Lived in Fayetteville NC since I was 8 years old. I work for the local newspaper here as a bill collector. My mom always told me my hair was so thick as a child so I’m guessing that’s why Just For Me was put into my hair at an early age. Lol I always had long pretty hair until after high school when I decided to lighten it then dye it RED. It got damaged so I cut it short then it grew back but was never the same after that.

How long have you been natural?

I’ve only been natural going on 2 years now. I had stopped getting relaxers for quite some time before I cut my hair off. I was getting blowouts done up until July 20, 2011, which is when I did my big chop. And I decided to just do the big chop because I am a little impatient and didnt want to wait, plus my old coworker who inspired me to go natural, Mikia Brown, didn’t think I was going to do it! I pretty much shocked everyone when I did it.

What motivated you to go natural?
A lot of friends were against me cutting my hair, but I told them its just hair and it will grow back. And here it is almost 2 years later and I have no regret of cutting it! I love it!

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?
The most memorable part of my natural journey so far would be when my hair finally got long enough to start putting little headbands and scarfs on. I felt so cute.

Then it got a little longer and I would tie a scarf or bandana and twist the front and my mom and aunt called me Lucy (like Lucille Ball which is why I have her tattooed on my leg)  I wouldn’t say it’s been difficult going natural for me because my hair has just been doing its own thing and I’m still learning things about being natural.

What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
I really enjoy wearing my puff which I didn’t discover that my hair was long enough to do until around December 2012. That’s definitely my go to style these days. Before I would just throw a scarf around it, tie it into a bow and go!

Any memorable reactions from family or others since going natural?
Hmm memorable reactions. Too many to recall any specific ones. I just remember alooot of MALES being very accepting of my new look. Some female friends didn’t like it much until it grew out longer. I received a lot of compliments from random strangers while just out and about, shopping or at work. I still get that a lot. One thing I haven’t experienced as much as natural girls on IG rant about, is people asking to touch my hair. That’s very rare unless its someone I know. Lol

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

As far as hair regimens I don’t have much of a routine besides putting a curl definer, moisturizer, and leave in conditioner pretty much daily. I don’t wash my hair very often because shrinkage is a pain in my butt. Products I like to use are African Pride Shea Butter Miracle bouncy curls pudding, African Pride Olive Miracle moisturizer lotion, Sofn’free milk protein & olive oil leave in treatment (after I wash my hair) and I like Mixed Silk leave in conditioning creme by Silk Elements.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

As far as words of inspiration, I would just encourage ladies to try something new or different with their hair. Don’t be afraid to be bold and different and express yourself. And most importantly it’s hair, no matter what you do to it, it’s going to grow back!

If you like this headband hit Pia up, she makes them!
