Naturally Fierce Feature: Lynnette

My name is Lynnette Joselly, I was born in Queens, NY, now live in Miami, FL and am a proud Dominican. My hair has been through so much and is still recovering. When I was young I use to have beautiful bouncy curls, then I was introduced to gel, mouse, and relaxers. I got addicted to relaxing my hair and loved the really straight results with no flyaways. It was the perfect solution to tame my frizziness. I started to notice my hair was now “stringy” vs. curly so I stopped relaxing my hair. However, I continued to do root touchups, until I saw a lot of breakage and then completely stopped any harsh treatments!

How long have you been natural?

I stopped relaxing my hair for years now but am still growing out the damaged hair. I go to a salon to get my hair blow dried because its always great to have different options of going straight or curly.

What motivated you to stop relaxing?
I decided to stop doing harsh treatment such as relaxers/ keratins because they are strong and change the texture of your hair. I miss my natural curls and really want them back so all those treatments were only harming my curls. My hair goes from suppperr curly to wavy to straight. I refuse to do a big chop because I am not a fan of cutting my hair and don’t think short hair would be flattering on me.

What are  some of your favorite  hairstyles?
In my opinion, the bigger the hair, the better! Although my hair is not as curly as it use to be, I am glad I still have volume! Sometimes I might pin one side back and keep the rest big. Or there are other times I might do a messy bun with some curls falling from the actual bun and side bangs practically covering my face. I don’t like neat and swept back, I like big and messy hair.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
Since I am still in the process of transitioning, I do use small curling wands, diffusers, twisties, etc so help emphasize my curls. And the days that I want that extra length to even out my layers, I add a few hair extensions. Now as far as products, I have been using L’Oreal Ever Curl Shampoo & Conditioner, which do not include any sulfate ingredients. For styling I use SheaMoisture Coconut Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Volumizing Hairspray.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
Andrea’s Choice and SunKissAlba have great tips and tricks on growing out curly hair.
