Naturally Fierce Feature: Jessica

Hello! My name is Jessica. I’m a wife and new mommy from Los Angeles. My hair journey has been and is still a learning experience.

How long have you been natural?
Ive been natural for 2 1/2 years.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I big chopped 2/15/11. I needed a break from hair and I was curious about my texture. I honestly knew nothing about my hair. I always had this bad misconception about my hair and finally I just wanted to get to know it. So one day after work, I came home and washed my relaxed hair. I looked in the mirror and wanted a change. So I took some scissors and chop!!! I don’t know what came over me. I only had 1/2 inch of hair on my head!! Not to mention I was getting married in 2 months and didn’t know how I could rock this twa on my wedding day. Nonetheless, I embraced it and my husband loved my new cut!

How would you describe your hair?
I have very fragile, very coarse 4c hair.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love the versatility of it. I can wear it in so many different styles!

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
Since going natural, it helped me love myself regaedless of length. I saw my inner beauty and it looked good on me! I gave me so much confidence. But it has been tough trying to figure out what my hair loves and what it hates. I’m still learning after years of neglecting my hair. Right now, I’m just wearing fun protective styles and trying to understand mt hair each day.

What are some of your favorite  hairstyles?
I love wearing marley hair!!! Like that is my thing! I use marley hair for crotchet braids and to do really obnoxious buns. You can do so much with kinky braiding hair.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
Well my husband absolutely loved my twa. My mom was inspired by me and she big chopped too! And then my little sister big chopped. I also have friends who are now going natural. I would say it has inspired a lot of people to embrace their kinks.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
To be honest, I’m not a regiman girl. I’m not really a hair person. I wash when I feel like I need to. I deep condition when I feel like it. I pretty much keep my hair in protective styles because I like the ability to get up and go. I’m also not a product junkie. I use shea butter mixture that I made and I also love shea moisture products.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
I love Mstanish1 and XGolden!! Those are my fav YouTuber’s! My favorite blog is http://hi-imcurrentlyobsessed.com/

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
When going natural, have fun! Take care of your hair, yes. But don’t restrict yourself from exploring. It’s your hair. Do what you want to it!
