Naturally Fierce Feature: Tawni

DSC_0050

Hello world,

My name is Tawni Fears. I am a native of Lithonia Georgia! I own a freelance writing company, The Tawni Loguess, and work for DTP Records. I have always had different hairstyles and colors, every time you blink, kind of lady. Now I’m the curly head and confident woman. I began my natural hair journey when my stylist Shone Swain simply told me to stop relaxing my hair, it didn’tneed it. I didn’t believe her. Yes, I saw that I had thick, long hair as a child, still I was programmed that relaxed hair was the only way. BOY WAS I WRONG.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for four years.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a
Big Chopper & Why?

I transitioned for about 8 months, then I did the big chop. I grew my hair out of a short cut, but didn’t think I’d be comfortable with short natural hair, so I waited until I had some length.

How would you describe your hair?

My hair is consistently curly throughout. The middle front area is a little different, thicker, and dryer, so I have to give it a little extra attention. My mane holds onto water for dear life. It behaves when pressed a few times a year, and it gets me plenty of compliments often. I’m not sure of myexact hair type, but it is pretty thick, and very healthy.

What do you love most about your hair?

I love that my hair grows pretty quickly, and is easy to manage. I love that it draws attention to my natural beauty, which before I hid from, for years.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

I will say falling in love with my curls, and seeing other people fall in love with theirs, partially because I motivated them to go natural. It has been pretty easy. I have found products and styles that work, so I stick to those.

What were some of your favorite hairstyles?

I’d get my stylist Shone to rod it or wear sew-ins. That way I was less likely to mess with my hair, or change my mind lol.
What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

The feedback has been 98% good. My family, friends, and loved ones love my curls, and how I wear my hair. Of course I had a few people that asked why I did it, but I never wore my hair in ways to please others. I did wonder what the reaction would be at first though. As a woman our hair is so important to us, so it’s kind of hard not to.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I am in LOVE with Shea Moisture products. I stick to them mostly. I shampoo my hair once a week, condition it, and then apply a mix of their smoothie and soufflé. I know some ladies use those products separately, but I would encourage readers to try them together! This week I have been using raw Shea Butter, and my hair loves it! That will be a staple product from now on.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

It is truly a journey when you walk away from society’s definition of beauty. It is so rewarding when you discover your own though. Don’t be afraid of change, going natural taught me to love myself in ways I didn’t feel I could. It’s truly an experience.
