Naturally Fierce Feature: Breana

image

My name is Breana, I am from Providence, Rhode Island and I am 21 years old. I have naturally curly hair but always wanted my hair straight when I was younger. As I got older and learned how to use a flat iron & dye my own hair, I began to straighten & dye my hair all the time, which resulted in damaged hair. My curls began to ruin and my hair started thinning, I’ve never had a “big chop” but decided to cut about 4-5 inches off to have healthier hair. I’ve then started to deep condition my hair twice a week and took hair growth vitamins to reach my goal.

How long have you been natural?

All my life.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

I had a lot of straight pieces throughout my hair because of the flat iron & my hair was damaged and not as healthy as it used to be. It was harder to style, I wasn’t comfortable with that look and I realized that I needed to start taking care of my hair. I started searching on YouTube for hairstyles and came across YouTuber’s with hair just like mine and taught me how to take care of my hair and the right products to use.

What do you love most about your hair?

I love how it is very versatile. I can switch from curly to straight and do many styles.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

The most memorable part was cutting my hair the shortest it has ever been and learning how to get used to it, because my hair has always been long. It has been both difficult and easy. The easy part was combing my hair & still being able to put it in a bun. The difficult part was getting used to short hair and trying to be patient & waiting to reach my goal.

What are  some of your favorite  hairstyles or current dos?

I usually would put a deep conditioner in & style a bun for a few hours, or my hair out with a wild look with a lot of volume.

I try to deep condition my hair twice a week with olive oil deep conditioner, I wash it when I need to style it I don’t have a wash day & my favorite products to use are mixed chicks leave in, curly curl cream, and Cantu. I never shampoo, & I use coconut conditioner. After washing I break my hair into four sections and apply the products.
