Naturally Fierce Feature: Sharon

nappy3

I’m Sharon from Queens, NY currently residing in PA.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for 10-12 years.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

I started transitioning after I met my husband in 2002.  We got married in 2003 and I was moving away from my mom who is the only person I felt comfortable doing my hair. Not wanting to deal with getting relaxers from someone else, I decided to see what my natural hair looked like.

How would you describe your hair?

Kinky, Nappy, Thick, and Fun!!

What do you love most about your hair?

I love its versatility!  4a/4b/4c hair can be transformed and molded like no other hair on earth!  It’s a lot of work but totally worth it!  It has made my life much more interesting and enjoyable.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?  Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

The difficult parts are hard to remember since I’ve been natural for some time…when I see someone with kinky 4b/4c hair say “Wow!  Maybe I CAN be natural”, “Wow, our hair DOES grow!” or “Nappy hair CAN be fabulous!” it makes my day because I’ve planted the seed toward one more person going natural!!  Makes my day.

What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?

1) Roller sets 2) Roller sets!  Did I mention roller sets?!  LOL!  Kinky hair without a lot of curl definition responds phenomenally to roller sets!  It’s like training your hair to be an afro…but under YOUR terms!  Perm rods and straw sets are my signature styles and faves!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

Crazy positive!  I have been photographed by strangers, approached by magazine editors in Paris, done runway shows…all because of the fascination with natural kinky hair.  We have the most unique hair on the planet and when it’s in it’s glory, it DEMANDS/COMMANDS attention!

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I’m pretty low maintenance with products.  I love Shea Moisture products and Giovanni products.  Both are pretty inexpensive and easy to find.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

I’m mostly excited about mine!  LOL!  Since I’m a 10 years plus natural, I’m used to working things out independently since there was NO YOUTUBE when I started.  I’m learning to check out others for trends…but I do my own thing usually.  One of my current favorites on Instagram is kim_nettles.  She’s a fabulous natural that goes to many places I’ve been to…but I wore my hair up!  She rocks her fro in remote places in Asia and I admire that!  She adores travelling and so do I!

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

Yes.  Regardless of your hair type, find out what your hair likes and stick with it.  Everyone’s hair type is different.  Some can rock a twist-out and look fabulous, others cannot.  My hair doesn’t care for braid-outs or twist-outs and that is ok.  Embrace what your hair CAN do and not what it WON’T or CANNOT do.  Experiment until you find what it likes and work with that.  Stay positive and avoid watching and/or exposing yourself to beauty that is artificial.  Stay natural and stay beautiful!
