Naturally Fierce Feature: Amyette

My name is Amyette Bridges originally from SC but I’ve been living in GA for 12 years now, currently residing in Sandy Springs, GA.  My journey starts as a teen, I’ve always wanted to do hair, a cosmetologist. I never gave much thought to my hair when I was younger it was pressed then on to the relaxer as time changed so I went with it because of the taught routine.
How long have you been natural? I’ve been without a relaxer now for 5 years, my journey began April 2009.

What motivated you to go natural?
In 2009 as a cosmetology student we watched a movie one day by Chris Tucker called Big Hair which I think had a large part of the big chop movement. Well after watching the movie I decided that was enough for me. The movie was the tipping point but actually just being a student working on the salon floor so many African American women sat in my chair and after seeing so much damage, hair lost, no edges, being afraid to cut it and just holding on the strands of damaged hair I decided I didn’t want my hair to be that way when I got older in age so I transitioned. At the time of transitioning I wore color, I love color but have been color free for 2 years now. I let it grow out and just pressed it and little by little keep getting my ends cut till well I was natural, no relaxer just coils. I wasn’t afraid of doing a big chop i just decided to take things slowly.

How would you describe your hair?
My hair, let’s see it’s thick and I have a lot of density, it’s coily, it reverts quickly, holds moisture very well, soft and can be dry if not moisturized.  My hair surprises me sometimes I straighten it recently to see how smooth it would get and to my surprise it was smooth but I still ended up doing a rod style. I don’t wear my hair in a pressed state.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love that my hair is full, somedays it looks huge in volume and other like I may have cut it but that’s just the coiling of my hair and reverting from outside influence- weather. I love that we can be versatile with our hair and the many styles you can try and how unique it is from other races, it’s never boring.

What has been the most memorable part of your hair journey?
I love the support I have been given from family, friends, and I especially love when an African American man compliments my hair and says I just love my beautiful black queens that means a lot. Going to hair shows and just so many products coming out with a bang and trying so many different ones. Educating myself on natural oils and butters have been rewarding and just embracing what is apart of my DNA structure it’s what God gave me. It has been challenging sometimes I get tired of the maintenance of keeping it up but most of us from the hair movement are educating ourself on our natural hair and have been seeking out ways to manage by watching videos and finding others with hair texture like ours and trying what they use.

What your favorite hairstyles?
I love to flat twist my hair and then take it down and style it. That’s what I pretty much do now, I like the way it suits my round face. I loved batu knot outs, two strand twists with rods adding Marley braid hair, taking a break with braids from my African braiders or a braided updo style, comb twists that looked like dreads but weren’t that was just to keep a protective style for a couple of days. I have even gotten a sew in earlier this year and made a wig to protect my hair due to schedule and life syle changes.
What have your experiences been as a ‘natural’? Any memorable reactions from others?
There will always be someone who wants to be  negative towards kinky or nappy but I don’t let that bother me because I accept who I am every last strand. I have motivated so many women to go natural to my best friend, my sisters, class mates at cosmetology school to coworkers. My sister was so excited she started watching videos and getting her self prepared for the big chop. One weekend while home in SC I remember because we laid our grandfather to rest she wanted the big chop and well that’s what I have her, she cried and I just comforted her she has been natural now for over 4 years and loves it.

What is your hair regimen?
I love to cleanse my scalp with Orangic Apple Cider by Braggs, I then use a sulfate free shampoo followed by a conditioner and leave in, while my hair is wet I use an oil like olive, coconut, jojoba or castor oil then seal with a cream. I use the Karens Body Beautiful Butter Love now and them twist with my favorite right now Camille Rose Naturals Curlaide Moisture Butter. I started off with Shea Moisture products I like then a lot then I’ve tried Design Essential Natural line Namaste, Cantu, Taliah Waajid, Tropic Isle, Givonni, Suave Naturals, ORS and so many others but my favorite product line right now would be Camille Rose Naturals and Karens Body Beautiful, I’m always opened to try new things.

Love your self first, have Patience if your transitioning reach out to other naturals for support. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
