Naturally Fierce Feature: Jaylynn

Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey.
My name is Jaylynn, I go by Jay Tee and I am a freelance makeup artist from Va. I’ve been natural 14 months. My natural journey was very impulsive. I didn’t plan on going natural. I was going to get my hair retouched with a relaxer and randomly decided while in my hair stylist chair to cut it all off.

How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls? It’s been a little over a year and I always embraced my curls. I never wished I had a certain curl pattern other than my own. I love my curls and the frizz that comes with them, lol.
What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why? I had no real defined reason to big chop. I’ve always been open to change with my hair. Growing up I had long hair but when I got to college I started cutting my hair shorter every couple years. I was wearing a pixie cut for 2 years before my big chop so I was just ready for something different and something I’ve never done before.

How would you describe your hair? Bold and beautiful

What do you love most about your hair? I love the fullness of my hair. As it grows out, the bigger the better. Just the other day, I had to lower my seat in my car because my hair was touching the roof lol.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both? The most memorable part was getting to know my curls. The journey of learning what to do/use and what not to do/use.

What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’? I’m a wash n go girl. However, I did my first twist out a few weeks ago and I got so much feedback on my social media. I’m going to challenge myself told do more styling. I just bought some rods yesterday so I can’t wait to test those out!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural’? Any memorable reactions from family or others? I didn’t get a big reaction from my immediate family because my mom has been natural for 10+ year with a tapered twa before it  became trendy. However since becoming natural, I’ve gotten amazing support from the natural hair community! It’s so amazing to see woman show love and support to one another…

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)? My hair regimen is simple. Less is more…you don’t have to have 10,000 hair products … I have 4 products that I use for my wash n go in the loc method- Cantu Shea Butter leave in, organic castor/olive oil, Shea Moisture Curl & Style milk and Design Essential Natural Honey Curlforming Custard as my styler.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs? Samariah Gilli, Colored Beautiful, Alyssa Forever, and Yolanda Renee
