Tell us a little but about yourself.

My name is Erez (pronounced like Terez, but drop the “T”) Martin. I am 40 years old, a mother of 3 daughters, and Glam-maw of 6 grand children (by my 2 oldest daughters). I am from New Orleans, LA, but I currently reside in Kenner, LA. I am a Licensed Practical Nurse by profession. My natural hair journey has been both, interesting and frustrating.

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for 2 years and 5 months. I have not always embraced my curls, especially during the beginning process. The bush (TWA) state was the most difficult state.

What motivated you to big chop?

What motivated me to “Big Chop” was because I was literally tired of getting perms, and going to a salon bi-weekly. I felt like I was spending too much money going to the salon, and on styles that only lasted for 2-3 days, depending on how I slept. LOL!!!!!

How would you describe your hair?

My hair is very thick, hard to detangle sometimes, sometimes very dry, low porosity, and has this cork-screw curl pattern.

What do you love most about your hair?

What I most love about my hair is the fact that I can wash and go on about my business. I no longer have to sit underneath a hot dryer. I love the thickness.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?

The most memorable journey of my hair was the amount of growth received over 2 year period, and the different colors I had. My journey has been both difficult and easy.

What is your favorite hairstyle?

My favorite hairstyle is double strand twisting, and wearing braids.

What reactions did you receive from friends and family?

My experiences from strangers, and friends have always been positive. People always complimented me, and told me how healthy, and beautiful my hair was. As far as family, my natural hair was very hard for them to accept. My daughter was embarrassed, my sister said she didn’t like my hair natural, and my ex was like “oh wow”, and took a long time to go out with me in public.

What is your hair regime?

I co-wash weekly, and shampoo & condition twice a month. My favorite products are: TGIN Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo, TGIN Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner; and Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave-In conditioner, Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil and Shea Yogurt Hair Moisture.
