1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey. (Name, where you’re from, etc)

Hi! My name is Akilah. I currently reside in Georgia. I am a blogger with a love for beauty, fashion, and natural hair.

2. How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls?

I have been natural for 2 years and 3 months and it was not until I big chopped that I decided to truly embrace my natural hair.

3. What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

For a majority of my life I have worn braids and weaves, but one day I realized that I was spending entirely too much time in salons and money on hairstyles so I decided to big chop. At the time of my big chop my hair was very uneven and many different lengths so out of frustration I decided to go to my local salon and chop it all off into a twa.

4. How would you describe your hair?

I have 4c hair so it is very thick and undefined. It does not have much definition, but I love it and its cotton texture.

5. What do you love most about your hair?

I truly do love the texture of my hair. When I first went natural it was very frustrating because I did not understand the texture of my hair and the products and methods that I should be using. I was forced to experiment and learn what works best with my hair.

6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

The most memorable part of my journey was big chopping. Over the course of my natural hair journey I have big chopped 3 times. Words cannot express the feeling of liberation that I had when I first chopped my hair. I no longer had the urge to drop hundreds on a new hairstyle. I was content with my crown and ready to rock it proudly.

7. What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’

As much as I love rocking my natural hair, I consider myself the protective style QUEEN. I absolutely love switching it up with wigs and braids. My favorite style has to be crochet braids. I love the variety of styles that can be created and the easeof installing them. I also love turbans. They are my go to style when I am feeling lazy or having a bad hair day.

8. What have your experiences been as a natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

My experience being natural has been nothing short of amazing. The reactions from my family and friends and even strangers were all positive which was a really good feeling.

9. What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

No matter what I am doing with my hair I always like to make sure it is moisturized. Coconut oil is my holy grail. I like to use it as a pre-poo treatment before I shampoo my hair to give my hair some added moisture and shine. I am also a sucker for a good leave in conditioner. My all-time favorite is Cantu Shea Butter.

10. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?

For inspiration I love tracking natural hair hashtags on Instagram. There are many pages that I enjoy following such as MyHairCrush, BerryCurly, ChicNaturalistas, and LuvYourMane.

11. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

One thing that I had to learn throughout my natural hair journey was to not compare your journey to someone else’s. Every journey is unique and different. So learn to love your hair and enjoy every second of the journey.
