1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey.
Peace and Love, my name is Brandi Triplett and I reside in Southern California. I’m a Mother, Companion, Teacher, Writer, Mentor and a Corporate Treasury Specialist by professional title. I was born in Los Angeles, CA, raised in Columbus, OH and now living in Riverside, CA. I’m at my best when I’m laughing, being fashionably fabulous, seeing my son smile, inspiring others and rocking my naturally fierce mane! I’m also at my best when I’m around positive people who embrace me in my raw and uncut nature. My natural hair journey was inspired by two friends and has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for understanding my true identity.
2. How long have you been natural?
I’ve been officially natural since 2011.
3. What motivated you to transition?
For me it’s more so “Who”. My good sister-friends Mei-Li and Bria. I watched them transition into their natural hair texture and I loved the way they embraced it. Mei-Li would give me products from her cabinet to use when I first began my journey.
4. Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper?
The first time, I transitioned because that was where my comfort level was at that time. In the midst of a heightened spiritual awakening, I did a big chop and absolutely loved it!
5. How would you describe your hair?
My hair is unapologetically fierce! She is “Out-Of-Africa”- fearless with kinks and coils!
6. What do you love most about your hair?
I love how thick my hair is. When I see my hair, I see history. I love how versatile and beautiful my hair is.
7. What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?
The most memorable part of my journey was learning about chemical damage through trial and error. Two months after my transition I experimented with purple hair dye. I did it myself, no experience, and caused my hair to break tremendously because of the intensity of the bleach and my lack of maintenance. I’ve learned since then, that was early on. My journey has been easy, the only struggle for me was wishing to go to sleep midway through twisting my hair at night. I had to find a better way.
8. What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’?
In the beginning I loved wearing twists-outs. Now, I love to wear my kinky ‘fro, untamed.
9. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
My experience has been eye opening, fun and full of self-love. A memorable reaction happened one night when I walked into a gas station and the clerk, a Middle Eastern man, was so attracted to the style I was wearing along with my hair texture that he asked to take a picture. So, there was a line forming behind me of customers waiting while I’m pivoting in a circle while he’s snapping away on his phone. Hilarious.
10. What is your hair regimen (including favorite products)?
I can’t say that I have a daily regimen. I keep my hair moisturized, I love coconut oil, low stress, eat healthy and drink a lot of water. My favorite products for my hair is coconut oil, castor oil, and the Deep Masque Treatment by Shea Moisture. Moreover, I love trying different brands and products.
11. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
I don’t have favorites. When I need inspiration, I find it almost anywhere.
12. What has been your experience when dating while natural?
I tend to attract men who embrace the authenticity of my afro-hair. Moreover, they appreciate culture and heritage. I get compliments from men who look to be from many walks of life and that’s always fun and interesting. My partner absolutely loves and embraces my hair as he loves and embraces his African Heritage.
13. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
Please understand that your journey should not be a race or competition against anyone. Your journey into your natural hair texture is solely about YOU. Get to know yourself and embrace the person you see in the mirror. Don’t judge your progress by the progress of others, uncover your own beauty and thrive there!
