1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey.
My name is Kristina Smith and I was born and raised in Louisville, Ky. I have moved around a lot and I’m happy to call Austin,Tx home now! I am a full time Esthetician Student, Wife, & Mother. Ever since I decided to go natural I have discovered so many positive things about myself and I am much more confident than I used to be.
2. How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 3 1/2 years. I always had this idea that curly hair was frizzy and not cute. I had this huge obsession with flat ironing my hair everyday and also used to get chemical relaxers in my hair as a kid.
3. What motivated you to transition?
When my son was born I decided to do a big chop and get rid of all the years of heat damage.
4. How would you describe your hair?
My hair is a mixture between kinky & fine.
5. What do you love most about your hair?
What I love most about my hair is the thickness and how much volume I get.
6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey?
The most memorable part of my journey is when I flat ironed my hair to do a length check and I had finally achieved waist length hair! Has it been easy or difficult or both?! I would say it has been pretty easy but a lot of work.
7. What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’
I love braids! I also love a good chunky twist out.
8. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
Growing up all the women in my family never embraced their natural hair. Everyone would slap a relaxer in their head as soon as their edges started to get curly. I grew up thinking my natural hair was some sort of curse. When I finally embraced my natural hair I convinced them to go natural too and we have all been team natural ever since.
9. What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I wash my hair with shampoo once a month with Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen Grow And Restore Shampoo. Every 3-4 days I will co wash and deep condition. My favorite deep conditioner right now is Camille Rose Naturals Coconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment. I usually style my hair with a cream based product like CURLS Blueberry Bliss Leave In Conditioner, and also a gel based product Like Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker or CURLS Blueberry Curl Control Jelly.
10. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

11. Anything you want the readers to know?
I believe that being natural starts from the inside. You have to be confident enough to step outside of your comfort zone and not be afraid of what others will say about you. Every natural, no matter what color, shape or size is beautiful and we should all stick together in our natural hair community. We need more uplifting and positivity and only we have the power to make that happen.
Styling Tips: A satin bonnet or satin pillowcase are major key for naturals! Also lots and lots of deep conditioning! One of my favorite things to do is sleep with a deep conditioner in my head then rinse it out in the morning. Your hair will be so super soft and moisturized. Also if you are trying to grow your hair out long wear lots of protective styles. I would go weeks at a time where my hair was either in braids or twists and I noticed more rapid growth.
