Naturally Fierce Feature: Devon

Hey now! My name is Devon andI’m from Louisiana but reside in Dallas, TX.

How long have you been natural?
Myjourney started 5 years ago (Feb 2008) when I decided I no longer wanted arelaxer. I hated the smell, the crispy edges (lol) and I was just plain curiousabout my natural texture.

What motivated you to transition? Wereyou a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I began to research ‘naturallycurly hair’ and what type of prodcuts I could use for my texture. I had beenusing lots of mousse, grease and stuff that was simply bad for my hair. I neverbig chopped beucause in 2007 I cut my hair off into the asymetrical bob tryingto be like Rihanna, lol! I had the last of my relaxed ends clipped off in Feb2011.

What has been the most memorable partof your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
The most mermorable definitelyhas to be attending the World Natural Hair Show in ATL in 2012 where I was ableto meet and form unbreakable bonds with my now blog buddies aka Just Curlz. Ithas been difficult for me in the sense that I still at times struggle to findthe correct products for my hair type based on season/weather changes.

What were some of yourfavorite transitioning hairstyles?
I wore alot roller sets in the beggining and once I discoveredCurly Nikki and YouTube, it was on and poppin’! I would do a twist out here andthere, but wash and go’s were and still are the easiest.

What have your experiences been as a‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
My mother telling mewhen I was pregnant in 2009 that I needed to get a perm! Like, really mama?!?No ma’am! She said it would be easier for me and that I needed it, NOT!

What is your hair regimen (includingfav products)?
I wash monthtly with a shampoo, I try for sulfate free, butwhatever is on had is typically what I go for. Co-wash and deep condition midweek, protein treat once a month and apple cider vinegar rinse every othermonth. My favorite products are Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner, also thier GPB brand, Oyin Honey Hemp conditioner, Kiss My Face UpperManagement gel, Shescentit Masrhmallow Herbal Hair Cream, and coconut oil, butreally any oil.

What are some of your favorite naturalhair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
My blog site, www.justcurlz.com,curlynikki.com , aroundthewaycurls.com. I love eclark06 on YouTube as well asDenimPixie.

Anything you want the readers to know?Inspirational words?
Being natural is an almost undescribable feeling. It makesme feel sexy and so carefree. I fell in love with my hair and all that it cando all over again!Growth takes time, so have patience. Value a healthy head ofhair over length. I believe moisture is key, so don’t be afraid of water!
