Naturally Fierce Feature: Juliet C. Obodo of Fete du Juliet

My name is Juliet and I’m the Executive Producer of Follicle, a film about people of color and the barriers that lie in between. I also manage a fashion and travel blog titled Fete du Juliet . I was born in Nigeria but raised in New Jersey. I currently reside in Manhattan.

How long have you been natural?

This is my second time returning to my natural state. My first time was while I was at Spelman College. I began my current journey two years ago.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

I left my corporate job to travel through Europe and Africa. While in Spain I met a women with the loveliest sister locs. At first I envied her until I realized that I was free to wear my hair however I pleased. I want the transitioning route and wore hair weaves and wigs.

How would you describe your hair?

I have 4C textured hair but it’s not very thick. I have a small head so not a lot of surface area to work with. LOL. It loves creamy moisturizers versus liquid ones. My shrinkage is cray but it’s very easily manipulated and stretched.

What do you love most about your hair?

The color; it’s a dark brown and I get light streaks during the summer.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

Getting to know the hair that grows out of my head has been a wonderful experience. I highly recommend that women of color do it at least once in their adult lives. That is what we promote in Follicle; returning to your natural state.

What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?

I love kinky twists and braids. I’ve been wearing a lot of top buns to deal with the city’s crazy humidity.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

My two younger sisters are also natural so we trade tips and have bonded over our coils. My parents are a different story. Though they are African they feel this is American renegade behavior. Whenever I visit home I’m afraid that my father will slap a relaxer on my head while I sleep.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I use Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding for moisturizing and products from Hair Rules and Karen’s Body Beautiful. They are actually offering their products as perks on our Indiegogo campaign. Ladies here is your chance to stock up!

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

I routinely check Black Girl Long Hair and Curly Nikki. My ADHD won’t allow me to sit still enough to watch YouTube .

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

I want the readers to know that the natural experience is an amazing one. It isn’t just about getting a big ‘fro or pretty curls. It is about accepting yourself on a physical and biological level which will lead you to a higher level emotionally and spiritually. I also hope that they support this message and our film!
