Naturally Fierce Feature: Tya

My name is Tya, I’m from Winston Salem NC. I am 21 years old and a senior at Campbell University.

How long have you been natural?

I have always had naturally curly hair but in my senior year of high school I got a perm. I went back natural at the end of my junior year ofcollege.

What motivated you totransition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

During college, I neglected my hair andit had become unhealthy. I was too scared to do the big chop so I became atransitioner. The transition process was easy for me because even with a permmy hair, my natural curls were still defined when wet. I stopped getting permsand got my ends clipped
regularly.

Every now and then I like to straighten my hair with my instyler.

What has been the mostmemorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

My first time trying bantu knots has to be the most memorable because I didn’t let them dry long enough but I loved the curls that they would have given. All the late nights I stayed up trying new hair styles and products are also memorable parts of my journey. The great hair days and even the epic fail days have been great moments in my hair journey.

What are  some of your favorite  hairstyles?

I love banana clips and all the styles that can be done with them. I have to were my hair pulled back at work but I don’t like to use hair ties a lot in my hair so banana clips aremy go to for styles. I do like to use the pineapple method in my night timeroutine but I only do this method every other night.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

My mother has always loved my natural hair and she worked so hard to keep me natural for  many years. She was so hurt and upset when I got my perm so when I told her I was going back natural she was my biggest supporter. I remember her talking me to the store and buying all the productsthat she use to use on my hair when I was natural to help me in my transition phase. Many of those products have been replaced with new ones, but I was s othankful for my mom and her support.

What is your hair regimen(including fav products)?

I’m always trying new products and adding and removing products inmy hair regimen. Currently I’m using Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner as a leave in conditioner once a week, Miss Jessie’s quick curls and curly buttercreme as stylers and moisturizers. I also use different types of shea oil as a moisturizer. I love for my products to smell good and sometimes I try products just because they do smell good but healthy hair is my main priority.

What are some of yourfavorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?

The glamtwinz334 on youtube have been my hair tutors. I follow their night time hair routine and I love trying products from their product review videos. I also love following accounts on instagram similar to @globalcouturelike @shehasgonecurly and @naturalhairdaily

Anything you want thereaders to know? Inspirational words?

I just want to encourage readers to stick with the natural processand not be afraid to try new styles and products. Most of my best hair days come when I let my hair do its own thing.
