A Transitioning Story: Toni

My name is Toni I'm 18 years old I'm in my first year of college I'm studying nursing and hope to be a RN in a couple of years. My hair journey started January 2012 when i got my last perm my senior year of high school , my relaxed hair was never damaged i always had long hair I got tired of having straight hair all the time it was so boring & I began to fall in love with big hair. Since i got a perm at s young age i was very curious about how my natural hair looked. So Jan,19 2012, was my last perm & when my transition began after that I started experimenting with Flexi rods & cutting heat out of my regimen period, then came the braid outs which is my fav , then buns which is my second fav. I've been transitioning for a year & 4 months & I plan on big chopping when I hit 2 years.

How long have you been natural?

I
'm not 100 % natural yet I've been transitioning for a year and four months

What motivated you to transition?
I'm a transitioner, and  the fact that I didn't remember what my natural hair looked like motivated me to transition also wanted my hair to be healthier than it was. I chose to transition because the big chop would have too drastic because I had long hair my whole life.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?
The most memorable part of my transition is seeing my natural texture and
getting to know my hair after being relaxed for the most part of my life. When I
first began my transition it wasn't easy because I was very unfamiliar with the
two textures and didn't know what products to use to maintain it . But it became
easy when I started to experiment with products and it became a breeze.

What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
My favorite transitioning hairs styles are braid outs and buns which are my
go to styles, being that I still have sum relaxed ends, I can't do wash & gos yet.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable
reactions from family or others?

My experience as a natural has been very positive, everyone loves my hair
and always wants to touch. Mostly everyone who speaks with me about my hair want
to know what my regimen is, but I hate when people constantly ask me of my
hair is real.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

Before I started working I deep conditioned over night every 3 days &
co-washed, but now I have very little time so I deep condition with queen helene
cholesterol hair conditioning cream once a week for 2 hours max , I co-wash with
treseme naturals or any treseme conditioner that's good with moisture. I clarify
my scalp with apple cider vinegar every 2 weeks cause I have yet to find a good
shampoo. I use kinky curly knot today as my leaving conditioner very good for
detangling. While my hair I wet I apply my moisturizer which is elasta qp's
mango butter and I seal with Jamaican black castor oil. Depending on what I'm
doing to my hair I use Shea moisture's curl enhancing smoothie for my braids
outs & if I'm doing a bun I use Eco styler gel after I moisturize and seal . I
moisturize daily with my elasta qp's and seal with Africa's best herbal oil
since its lighter than the castor oil. If I get a trim I got to the salon.
