Naturally Fierce Feature: China

My name is China Jones. I am from the Hampton Roads area and recently graduated from Norfolk State University ’13 where I obtained my B.S. Business Management. I am the owner and creator of
Oh So Natural by China Ashleigh; an organic hair care line that promotes healthy natural hair!

How long have you been natural?

I’ve been all natural 1 and half years and I am celebrating 3 years post relaxer this July 2013 since I started my natural hair journey.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

I’ve always usually had long thick hair but over the years of excessive relaxing and heat styling my hair began to thin and break. So I decided to just let go of relaxers with no initial intent to go natural, I just knew I wanted my hair healthy again and it all lead from there. I decided to long term transition for about 1 year and half by regularly trimming my ends, and focusing on breaking the bad habit of using heat excessively. I decided that was best for me since I was not ready to let go of all my hair at once.

What has been the most memorable part of the journey?
For me the most memorable part of the journey was when I fully and truly embraced my hair and let the liberation take over and bring out a new confidence in me that wasn’t there before. I can honestly say I have had a great natural hair journey, some times were tough trying figure out techniques that worked for my hair. I had to break the mindset that my curls had to be “perfect” and understand at times it’ll be frizzy and hard to manage but I just learned to love it even harder.

What are  some of your favorite hairstyles? I wear my hair mostly in wash and gos, twist outs, or high puffs. I didn’t wear too many transitioning styles as I wore my hair straight through my entire transition. I would love to try new styles.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’

For awhile I questioned and wondered what my true texture would look like, what  people will say or think…now despite what others may think I appreciate the compliments I receive and when others seek my help and advice!

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I usually wash my once a week using Oh So Natural’s Deep Cleansing Clay Mask, use Oh So Natural Whipped Crème Brulee as my leave in, seal hair and scalp with Oh So Natural’s Stimulating Growth Oil, and for hold I smooth in Eco styler gel.  Every other week I deep condition or pre-poo, and as needed I may co wash.

Night time: I either pineapple my hair or refresh curls by damping hair, adding product and 2 strand twisting. Take down next day.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?

My favortite youtubers are Taren Guy, Backsyncfan, BargainPrincess, Borderhammer, and TheNotoriousKia

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

To everyone that is natural, transitioning, or considering going natural I strongly encourage you to all embrace your curls, your texture, and the journey and love yourself! It takes patience, dedication, and experimentation but nothing to hard that we strong beautiful women can’t handle!
