Naturally Fierce Feature: Asila

My name is Asila and I just graduated high school and I reside in Michigan. I plan on going to Basytr University for herbal sciences and I hope to do music along the way.

How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural for about four years, I started my own hair without heat, eventually I loc’d my hair, which has been almost two years.

What motivated you to go natural? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

I transitioned because I was changing, so I felt my hair needed a new start as well, going into locs was the best decision for me. I only transition because it was the first thought to do, I have wanted my hair cut, but it went a different route.

How would you describe your hair?
I would describe my hair to be a mix of kinky and straight and I didn’t discover my texture, until I went natural, so I was shocked that all this time I didn’t know exactly what type of hair I possess, since I was putting heat to my hair all the time.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love that my hair laid back, i mean my hair is strong, it has been through so much damage and it always remain healthy and tough and I love the little mixture I have going on.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

Loc’ng my hair is the best and most memorable moment of my natural hair journey because it wasn’t something I would have chose to do. I really love the look and roots of locs, it’s been easy and difficult. Mostly having locs has been easy, but when it comes to styling it can be difficult to be new and spontaneous with my hair.

What are  some of your favorite hairstyles?
I really love my styles for prom, since my hair actually looked different for a change.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’
Being a natural has been a great and uplifting moment for me. I love that I stand out with my own accessories, but others see the same value i have and inspire them to change one thing about themselves into something valuable. Wearing my hair natural has made me look deep in myself. One time, a man approached me and said “I love your hair and I just want to say black women with natural hair Rock”, when I hear positive words like his, it humbles me and makes me continue being me.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

Shea butter is my main regiment, I use every time I retwist my locs, I love shines and cleanness it gives my hair.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?

I admire many natural hair advocates, but I do love chescaleigh and the videos she has for locs and her life with as a “locster”. I like Koko on YouTube, she has great videos too for styling, makeup, and many more.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

I want people to live their life, the way they want, despite the rude comments being said, do what you want to because if you don’t, it’ll be looked as regrets the rest of your life.

Where can people find you for more information?

I’m on Instagram: @_nappyroots_  and Facebook, I love meeting people with ambitions!

“I want people of color to know their roots because it will help you know you really are, and the world will become so much clearer.”
