Naturally Fierce Feature: Kierra

My name is Kierra. I’m 20 years of age, I was born in raised in Germany and currently live in America. I’m mixed with French, Native American, and Black. I’m a Fashion/Home Furnishings major pursuing expansion of my modeling career.

How long have you been natural?

About 3 years.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

I went back and forth between perm and natural while I was in middle school transitioning to high school. I would always get annoyed with my hair and always chopped it off. My junior year is when I decided to go and stay all natural so I did the BC.

How would you describe your hair?

Free and happy. It has a mind of it’s own. I just keep it moisturized and remove split ends.

What do you love most about your hair?

I love that it’s mine, it’s natural, & it’s healthy.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

Most memorable part of my journey is the three month measuring marks. When you see the progress it keeps you positive. It’s exciting and let’s you know you’re closer to your desired length. I think it was both difficult and easy. It’s hard at first because of all the negativity people try to plant in your mind but once you overcome the negative it’s so easy.

What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyle?

For me the best was just wearing it out. There was no stress of trying to put a hairstyle into it. Every now and again Marley twists.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

I’ve had both positive and negative experiences. My dad was very upset when I cut it all off, he’s in a sense conservative when it comes to female and male rolls. He said I looked like a guy. Lol So I straightened it a lot in the beginning stages. But now he has no complaints. Lol the rest of my family really were for it. In fact my sister did the big chop her self and my mom is transitioning.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I condition my hair every night while in the shower and do a deep conditioning on Sunday nights. I use shampoo about once a month. My favorite products are Cantu, Dr. Miracles curly formula, Mixed Girls, and Curls Mixed.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?

The only person I’m subscribed to for hair is Taren Guy. She’s amazing. Other than that I follow CurlyBeauties on Instagram just to see different hairstyle ideas if I’m ever in the mood to try something.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

Don’t lose faith in your hair. Positive thinking brings positive results. Remember your hair isn’t going to grow 5 inches over night. You have to treat your hair like a human somewhat. It needs hair food (oil), water, checkups (trimming and conditioning), needs to breath, and it just needs love.

Where can people find you for more information?
