Naturally Fierce Feature: Sydney

My name is Sydney. I’m from Brooklyn but I’ve lived in Pennsylvania the last 6 yrs.

How long have you been natural?
My last relaxer was September 2012, right before my 25th Bday!

What motivated you to transition?
I’ve wanted to go natural since I did my first BC back in 2010 however I didn’t know how to work with my natural texture and anytime I would start transitioning I had the nay sayers asking ” what are you thinking?” “you know you do not have the type of hair that can go without a perm” etc. So I buckled and got another relaxer a few months later. My hair was growing back nicely, but my beautician at the time just suddenly quit and I had to start going to someone different. I started to notice how thin my hair was beginning to get after I changed stylist and decided I no longer wanted to get relaxers and I didn’t care what anyone thought about it! 🙂

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I transitioned for 7 months and did my big chop this past April. I knew I couldn’t just chop it off without having any length at all because I am accustomed to hair. So I transitioned a bit and then once I had about 2 inches of my natural texture I did my BC.

How would you describe your hair?
My hair is very thick and course.

What do you love most about your hair?
The versatility I have because of my texture!

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
This journey has definitely been an interesting one! I’ve learned so much about natural hair and the versatility we have. The most rewarding part of this journey is just being able to embrace who I am and be FREE! I know I have a long way to go and a lot learn and I am so EAGER and READY!

What are  some of your favorite hairstyles? I am currently rocking Heat Free Hair the ForKurls collection and I love it. Marley Twist and Poetic Justice braids are also two of my favs!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others? My family members were not on board at first lol but they’ve come to Embrace it. The most difficult person to explain my decision to was … OFCOURSE my boyfriend lol. He just didn’t understand as he is so accustomed to long straight hair and in society that is unfortunately what so many believe is “Beauty” so I couldn’t blame him. What I did do was educate him. I had to show him pictures of different ladies and their journeys and how there is so much beauty in the black women, especially a black women in her natural state. I’ve also learned that including your significant other in the journey with you definitely makes it easier. Fortunately he is all in now, but this was going to happen with or without him or anyone else’s approval for that matter

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I love Shea moisture products! And I am also subscribed to Curlbox so I love trying the different products found in my boxes each month.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
I adore NaturallyGG and I am also a big fan of Curly Nikki.
Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
One of my favorite quotes:
“We have to stop being ashamed of being black. A broad nose, a thick lip and nappy hair is us, and we are going to call that beautiful whether they like it or not. We are not going to fry our hair anymore.” -Stokely Carmichael
