Naturally Fierce Feature: Sherica

Greetings Dolls! My name is Sherica and-editor I’m the co-owner/co-editor of Shatterproof Glass Dolls LLC. I’m a proud Florida Doll currently residing in Tampa where I attend USF and take classes toward my Bachelors in Science. I’ve been natural and creamy crack free my whole life. My mother refused to put any chemicals in our hair while we were growing up because she didn’t want to permanently alter or change the natural chemistry of our hair, plus being a former transistioner herself she knew the harm a relaxer could cause first hand so she just opted out of it for her children. We were raised believing that we were beautiful princesses and future queens and that our natural curls were our crowns. Something we still believe in until his day not just for ourselves but for women everywhere.

How long have you been natural? 26 years (my whole life thus far)

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why? Because I never had a perm I never really transitioned. However when new and improved natural hair products started popping up, I feel like I tried almost every one of them to see if I could spice up my curls even more. That’s when I really started figuring my hair more and what were its likes and dislikes.

How would you describe your hair? Temperamental, wavy with corkscrew curls, versatile, and a combo of my ancestry. I’ve literally got 3 different hair types in my hair so it’s hard for me to choose what hair type I have. I never really understood that whole hair typing scale anyway. My hair is simply just my hair, not a type.

What do you love most about your hair? I would say its curl pattern and versatility

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?! The most memorable parts of my journey took place during my college years when I started experimenting more with my natural curls and finding out it’s likes and dislikes. But mostly it’s likes.

What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles? MY WASH N’ GO AFRO PUFF!!! I mean where would I be without?! It’s quick, simple, and sleek. Not to mention when I found out that I could make it look even better with defined curls by pulling up my hair into a quick puff after a wash n’ go… girl please. Embrace the shrinkage Dolls. EMBRACE IT!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others? I’ve experienced both good and bad. I mean, there was a time when being natural wasn’t considered “cool” or trendy, and those were the more annoying reactions.” Girl I don’t know how you do it,” “your hair looks weird when it’s wet,” “why don’t you get a perm?” Now most of those individuals have such severe damage themselves that they’re walking around looking like Caillou. Other than that I’ve never really had any negative reactions. Especially now. In my culture (Jamaican) natural is beautiful, so I’ve never had anything but support from my family and that’s the only reaction I care about other than my own.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)? It changes and varies based on the condition of my hair. I used to love cantu shea butter, but now my hair loves OBIA Naturals curl moisture cream and curl hydration spray, along with Shea Moisture hair smoothie and Giovanni’s direct leave-in conditioner. I was my hair once every two weeks (sometimes longer depending on my schedule) and I moisturize CONSTANTLY!

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs? Shatterproofglassdolls.com, and as for YouTube blogs I enjoy Naturally Candi’s channel as well as NaturalSistas.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words? Love yourself and know that you are a spirit first and flesh second. So even though we should keep up with our appearances, don’t’ judge yourself based on what another person has. This also includes your hair, especially your hair since it is your crown. If your curls are tightly coiled, don’t feel for a second that someone with looser curls is sexier or has “good hair” as compared to you and vice versa. Good hair is HEALTHY hair. Love yourself and embrace your personal swag.
