Naturally Fierce Feature: Tatiana

My name is Tatiana Harvey and I will be 25 November 29. Yea! I’m from Los Angeles, Ca. Both sides of my family are Jamaican. I lived there my entire life until I moved to Bakersfield, Ca where I attended college. In my second year I welcomed my lovely little girl to this world. Three years later I earned my Degree. I later began to explore my creative side again and started drawing and painting. Later started my company Tyeink. (pronounced tie-ink) www.tyeink.com. This is just my creative outlet focusing on the beauty of life while finding myself. I love to promote the beauty of women and natural hair. I feel it is so important that every woman out there knows how beautiful and important they are. I now reside in Greensboro, NC with my fiancé and biggest supporter Britt Hill.

(me and my fiancé and the last weave I ever wore)

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural since October 2011

(My hair before transitioning)

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

At the time that I decided to transition I was looking for a change. I was so tired of constantly straightening my hair only for it to poof the next day. I had my first weave installed in 2010 and thought that it could be an easier style to wear, because I refuse to perm my hair. The last weave I took out left my hair so thin and destroyed I was devastated.

I looked to youtube and searched for natural hair styles unaware of the vast community that was available. There was one youtube guru that stuck out to me and that was Naptural85. Somehow I felt like I could related to her. So I gave it a try with a bantu knot , and I absolutely hated it! lol I didn’t give up and allowed my hair time to get used to it. I let my hair grow and trimmed the straight ends as I transitioned.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?  Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

My most memorable part of being natural was the first time I seen my natural curl pattern. It took my hair a bit of time to transition but once it began I fell in love with it! Both! It hasn’t been too hard of a journey, I did a lot of research during my transition that helped me through the difficult times like next day hair and how to get 2 or 3 days for a twist or braid out. Now that I know my hair and myself this journey has become a lot easier.

What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
I loved to put my hair in twists. The would last for a week or so and the care was so easy and manageable as I transitioned. More recently I have loved just wearing my hair out. Give it a good shake and be free. Bobby pins are evil! lol they hurt 90% of the time so I avoid undos and styles like that.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

My experiences have been awesome! So many of my friends have transitioned saying I helped to inspire them! And honestly that type of feedback inspires me as well. When I normally out a lot of people stare and follow with OMG I love your hair!! I used to be shy and say thanks, now I hand out a business card to those who ask how do I do it. I offer some tips I think my help on my website because I know it could help someone out there.  My most memorable question had to have been this older caucasian gentleman “how do you curl your hair my wife takes hours to get her curls?’ I simply told him I was born this way.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I normally do a braid out. Its quick and easy and last a lot longer than twist outs for me. I do about 10 braids every other night or less. I always moisturize my hair with water, leave in conditioner, followed by my homemade shea butter and oils.

My fave product would have to be coconut oil! The slip it gives my hair with the added definition and shine is amazing. Also shea moistures has won me over with the deep treatment mask. Im not big on using too many products I like to keep it simple.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?

My favorite of all time is Naptural85!! Others include NaturalNeiicey, and HeyFranHey 🙂

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

I just want everyone out there to know that natural hair is a process it will not work over night. Just forget about length and hair types, and focus on health hair the rest will take care of itself. No matter the length or the hair type just remember you are beautiful!
