A HAIR STORY: “WHY I ABANDONED THE NATURAL HAIR JOURNEY.”

How many times have you heard this “I want to go natural can you give me some tips?”  Only to hear this a few weeks later :  “Girl!! I couldn’t do it, it is just too hard” Yeah, I know, we all have. As a natural, well let me speak for myself this constant back and forth and “giving up” has always been annoying. Mentally, I felt like the person lacked commitment, patience and courage to take such a liberating journey. But, could I be wrong? Why?  Why can’t some of our sisters make such a step…a … [Read more...]

Are Crochet Braids Just Weaves in Disguise?

For many of us, going natural was a personal statement of self-acceptance.  It was a commitment to getting rid of harmful chemicals in your hair regime, and living a life where your natural hair and health were priority.  We looked society’s Eurocentric beauty standards in the face and said, “Nah boo!”and as a result, our self-esteem skyrocketed! We realized that part of that commitment meant getting rid of weaves and wigs and anything that is not  naturally OURS.  We went natural and rocked … [Read more...]

I’d say I've been natural for practically entire life until I pulled a short stint. Let me explain. . . Why It Bothers Me That People Assume I’m Mixed Because of My Hair

One of the things I love about my natural hair is its versatility. I can wear a kinky twist out one day and the next day I can be seen wearing shiny, smooth curls. Manipulating my hair has always been fun for me. On the rare occasion that I do wear a wash n’ go and people ask “Did you cut your hair?,” I just giggle silently at their lack of knowledge about shrinkage. Sometimes people just can’t wrap their brain around the fact that hair can be gigantic one day and short the next. … [Read more...]

Mommy’s Little Helper

I remember as a little girl, my mom would pull out a big container of all white heart-shaped beads. She didn’t even have to say anything because I already knew what time it was: Hair Time. After washing, conditioning, and detangling my hair she would braid me up and slide a bunch of white beads on my ends to protect my hair. Every hair time wasn’t perfect or fun, but I do remember my mom asking me to count out a certain number of beads for each braid. I was her little helper and it made me … [Read more...]

Double Standard? Why is It Considered “Hood” When Black Women Experiment with Color?

I’ve had a thing for colored hair for as long as I can remember. In middle school, all the skater chicks and alternative girls dyed their hair every color of the rainbow after seeing celebs change their hair color on a weekly basis. We frequently dyed our hair with Kool-Aid and Manic Panic to our parents’ dismay, hoping the rain never came or we’d end up with a t-shirt soaked with orange, purple, or green streaks. At the time, most of these celebrity influences were white, but I never thought … [Read more...]

How to Make a Wash and Go Last 5 Days!

The Wash and Go (WNG). It’s a popular hairstyle that we naturals either love or hate. For me, it’s one of my staples and I could not live without it. Some styles get worse as the days go by, but the WNG just gets better and better! It’s like a fine wine, aged to perfection.  My hair gets softer, bigger and a bit messier, which I don’t mind at all. The key to a lasting WNG is all in the products you use and how you preserve your curls overnight. Currently, I am using Treseme … [Read more...]
