Natural Hair Horror Stories

I know before I even begin to write this that many of us can relate to each other when it comes to people wanting to touch our beautiful natural hair.  As we walk with our afros piled high on our heads or our twist-outs cascading around our shoulders, it is understandable that many people will be curious about our newfound confidence in wearing our natural hair.  Here are a few of my experiences with other people’s curiosity about my natural. Coworker Confusion There was the time I spent 2 … [Read more...]

Mommy’s Little Helper

I remember as a little girl, my mom would pull out a big container of all white heart-shaped beads. She didn’t even have to say anything because I already knew what time it was: Hair Time. After washing, conditioning, and detangling my hair she would braid me up and slide a bunch of white beads on my ends to protect my hair. Every hair time wasn’t perfect or fun, but I do remember my mom asking me to count out a certain number of beads for each braid. I was her little helper and it made me … [Read more...]

Double Standard? Why is It Considered “Hood” When Black Women Experiment with Color?

I’ve had a thing for colored hair for as long as I can remember. In middle school, all the skater chicks and alternative girls dyed their hair every color of the rainbow after seeing celebs change their hair color on a weekly basis. We frequently dyed our hair with Kool-Aid and Manic Panic to our parents’ dismay, hoping the rain never came or we’d end up with a t-shirt soaked with orange, purple, or green streaks. At the time, most of these celebrity influences were white, but I never thought … [Read more...]

The battle of “Good” versus “Bad” Hair

Whenever I hear “good or bad hair” it not only makes me cringe but actually upsets me. Almost 4 years into my natural hair love affair and I still don’t get it, nor do I want to. This sort of statement always begs the question 1. who defines what “good” or “bad” is 2. why does said person get to make that judgment and 3. based on what? I have the same reaction when someone is overly obsessed with “curl typing” or defines what your, mine, their friend’s, their mother’s hair is. Do we … [Read more...]

Conservative Hairstyles for Church

When my hair first began to grow, I was very conscious of how big my hair was in certain environments. Interviews and other professional functions, church, weddings, and even movie theaters, had me questioning if my hair was considered “appropriate” for the occasion. I wanted to be able to express myself, while also not coming off as offensive to others. As much as we try to escape the box of what is considered appropriate for hair, its still completely normal to have doubts when searching for … [Read more...]
