Why are you natural?

This REALLY resonated with me. Let me explain. In my teenage years growing up in a small town where black people were the minority my top desire was to fit in. My skin colour was an obvious difference and I wasn’t able to change that. So what could I modify? My hair of course. So seeing these “popular” girls with their long, flowing straight hair and the desire to be one of them led me to relax my hair from a young age. To top it all off a strong sense of self-worth and confidence wasn’t … [Read more...]

Why “CAN’T” you go natural?”

For me, going natural is really “returning back to natural.” I find it funny when someone is in awe of your beautiful curls/coils/kinks but does not see themselves as a potential future naturalista. Do not get me wrong, I believe it is personal choice that should be made because you want to however, some people who come up with the funniest statements that make me question whether their compliments really are compliments. In some cases their“reasons” for … [Read more...]

What Do the Recent Military Regulations on Hair and Slavery Have in Common?

If you have not already heard, the military has gotten harsh criticism for the discriminatory regulations they put in place on hairstyles.  The appearance and grooming policy, AR 670-1,puts limits or completely bans hairstyles such as cornrows, twists, locks, and braids.  However, hair pulled straight back into a bun is approved.  Clearly, these regulations discriminate against Black women who commonly wear these hairstyles, particularly women who wear their hair natural. The military … [Read more...]
