Length Retention Tips for The Winter Time

0

Since I live in NYC where the weather is always…sometimes never in it’s correct season, it’s hard to maintain your natural hair due to winds, frigid weather, and the fear of getting a cold after doing a wash and go. Here are some tips that I’ve developed that will help you retain your length during the cold winter months.

1. Protective styles

I cannot stress how important protective styles can be during the winter time. When your ends are exposed to the harsh cold and the fabric of your scarves and wool hats, your ends can rub against the fabric cause you not to see any length. Protective styles are beneficial for your ends because your ends are protected from any unwanted snags and knots. Also you can be reassured that your hair will maintain it’s length.

2. Moisturize When You Wake Up and Before You Go to Bed

I’m a huge fan of the spray bottle. I’ve even convinced my mother to use it on her own hair and my little sisters hair. Our skin get very dry during the winter time which can be very annoying for someone like my self who has to deal with a extra itchy scalp. To control any itchiness and dry scalp, I’ve created my own mixture for a great moisturizer for the winter.

  • 3 drops of Tea Tree Oil (Anti-Fungal)

  • 3 drops of Rosemary Oil (Stimulant for Hair Growth)

  • 2 drops of Peppermint Oil (Fragrance)

  • ½ of the Spray Bottle filled with Water

The mixture also works well in the summertime and makes a great braiding spray without buying the braiding sprays that contain alcohol.

Wearing A Satin or Silk Scarf Under Your Hat.

The winter time gives an opportunity to wear very cute scarves, gloves, and hats. However the fabric of these accessories can pull and tug your hair. Wearing a silk scarf will protect your ends, preventing tugs and snags. Also don’t play with you hair while wearing gloves that are made of cotton material. Cotton can snag on your hair and you won’t be able to see any length.

 4. Weekly Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioning during the winter time is very important. You have to make sure your hair is moisturized in order to retain length. Deep conditioning will help keep your hair moisturized for a long time. You can create your own deep conditioner or purchase from your local beauty supply store. There are many methods of deep conditioning, you can steam, use heat, and a heating cap.

I hope these tips help you prosper with your healthy hair journey. The key to a great regimen is knowing what can make your hair healthier and loving yourself in the process.
