My name is Nikki Atkins, and I’m from Arkansas.

How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural for almost 2 years. I transitioned for one year from July 2010 until July 2011 (big chop). Watching Chris Rock’s movie good hair and wanting my curly hair back motivated me to transition. My natural hair journey has been quite easy. I’ve never been discouraged by any negative comments or rude stares. I love my natural hair, and that’s all that matters!

What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
While transitioning, my favorite styles were flexi rod sets and buns. I even wore braids twice during my transition. My transition was very easy; I felt transitioning at that time was a great decision because my relaxed hair was in an already healthy state. My current favorite styles to wear on my natural hair are roller sets, twistouts and most of all, wash n go’s.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’
Going natural has been one of the greatest experiences ever! I will never relax my hair again. I actually wish I would’ve transitioned long before I did. I don’t consider being natural a journey; it’s just me.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I don’t have a particular regimen. I just give my hair what I feel it needs. Usually, I’ll wash my hair with a sulfate free shampoo every week; sometimes I’ll co wash in between washes if my hair feels dry, or I just want a fresh style. I deep condition only if I feel my hair need it, usually once or twice a month. I don’t pre poo or do hot oil treatments. I live a very busy life style, so ain’t nobody got time fa dat (well at least I don’t lol)!
