Naturally Fierce Feature: Roshini (BKA Glamazini)

02.27.11

My name is Roshini Cope, but everyone online knows me as Glamazini. I started my website, then Roshini.net, in 2002 to document my transition from relaxed to natural hair.  In 2009 I converted it to Glamazini.com and started a YouTube channel at the request of my readers.

How long have you been natural?

I went natural in 1999, relaxed my hair for a short stint, then finally went and stayed natural in 2002.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?

In 1999, I found a thinning spot in my hair and went natural soon afterward.  I planned on transitioning for a while but only did so for 3 months because I did not like dealing with 2 textures. I eventually big chopped. Since then I’ve big chopped several times.

How would you describe your hair?

Thick and fast growing with significant shrinkage. If we’re talking hair types then 3C in front and the crown, 4a at the nape and 4b/c on the sides near my ears.

What do you love most about your hair?

My hair is unique. No one else has hair exactly like mine.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

The most memorable part of my journey would be the success of my website and YouTube channel and all the opportunities it has afforded me. I never saw that coming. My journey has generally been enjoyable with mini challenges along the way.

What are  some of your favorite hairstyles?

At my current length of 4” I’ve been rocking a wash-n-go, finger shingles, bantu knotouts and afro puffs.  When my hair was longer I opted for twistouts or protective styles like updos and buns on loose hair or twists.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

I’ve been natural for 40% of my life now so it is pretty much my norm. My family has been supportive, although they definitely prefer longer hair.  My husband doesn’t care. My experience over all has been positive, probably more because I’m pretty easy going when it comes to hair and most things don’t faze me.
