Messy Hair Don’t Care!
By this point we have all heard about the controversy surrounding Jay Z and Beyonce’s two year old daughter, Blue Ivy’s hair. There was a very clear divide amongst the natural hair community, but some individuals felt so strongly about the appearance of the toddler’s tresses that a petition was created. As a mother of two curly hair daughters, this petition was very disturbing to me.
Let’s just be honest. Everyday is not going to be a great hair day. We strive for perfection every morning, but most times we end up with a style that is completely different from what we were aiming towards. In the past, I was guilty of stressing over perfect hair; for myself as well as for my daughters.
In our society, there’s this notion that the way a child’s hair looks is directly related to the parenting skills of the mother. If my daughters’ hair is perfectly parted and interestingly styled then I have succeeded in motherhood. But, if my girls’ hair is frizzy instead of slick and messy instead of tamed then I am failing. Regardless of the intense love I have for my children and the lessons I teach them to raise them into productive adults, what matters to most is what they can readily see on the outside.
My youngest daughter helped me to embrace messy hair. I would spend a lot of time styling her hair in the cutest ways possible. Once complete, I would turn away to grab her accessories only to find that she quickly pulled her hair out of the style I just labored over. I could tell her “no-no” and restyle, hoping that she does not repeatedly undo her little puffs or braids. Or, I could accept that some days are just going to be “free-hair days” or “fab fro days.”
The quality of my mothering is not directly related to the way my daughters’ hair looks for the day.
As long as their hair is healthy, detangled, and moisturized my girls are perfectly fine.
Embrace messy hair: there are more important things to focus on when it comes to your children (loving them, educating them, and preparing them for their future; just to name a few)

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
