Naturally Fierce Feature: Vee

image

Hello ladies, I’m Vee, from Philly. Also known as @ANaturalObsession on IG, and that’s exactly what I have at the moment! Returning to my natural texture has definitely been an interesting, sometimes frustrating, fun, experimental, and informative process thus far!

The “Return” has been a lingering idea for the last few years, but I’ve never gave it any serious consideration until Me and my husband discovered we were expecting our first child in mid June 2012. Refraining from the Creamy Crack for the duration of my pregnancy was a no-brainer. Fast-forward 11 months when I finally got around to unleashing the beast (taking out my individuals lol), my hair was so big & full and I loved it. BUT, taking on a natural hair journey, along with my new born, and personal recovery, was NOT appealing. The Diana Ross look simply isn’t newborn friendly lol. So I gave in and relaxed my hair at the end of April 2013.

How long have you been natural?

I didn’t start my Natural hair journey until 2014. My last relaxer was on NYE 2013. I was only getting 2 perms a year, so a 6 month “stretch” isn’t actually a stretch for me. 7/1/14 marks my 6 month transition and officially past my normal relaxer period, so it’s a small mile stone I’m happy to reach.

What inspired you to go natural?

My biggest inspiration has truly been my daughter! She popped out with a head full of straight hair that quickly curled and kinked up into some beautiful tight little springy like curls. As a female who’s had a relaxer since age 10 (I know), when I found out it was a girl, all I could think of was how would her hair be? How would I be able to care for it? Crap, who’s going to teach me how to braid?! Etc. I learned to flat twist in a day, and braiding took about 2 weeks before I could really make it look neat. So my journey isn’t just for me, its for her too.

What do you love most about your hair?

I’ve always loved how thick my hair is. I’m a fan of the length of course, but volume wins me over every time!

What is your favorite hairstyle?

My go to style is a braid out. It’s quick, easy, and my husband loves when it looks a little wild. I tried a curly fro hawk in honor of reaching my 6 month mark, and I’m head over heels in love with it, because I can still get the volume I crave with the curls, and yet, on 90 degree days, it’s pulled back out of my face and mostly off of my neck! Perfect summer hair for me!

Tell us about your regimen.

As for my regimen…sheesh, where to start? In short, I’m partial to anything Carol’s Daughter. I’ve used the Tui line for years, and the Monoi line for the last few months. No matter which line I opt to use that particular week, I always deep condition with CD’s Tui smoothie! I’m also a fan of CD’s Lisa’s Hair Elixir which is a scalp treatment, that I use before each wash. I do a protein treatment using Aphogee’s 2 minute reconstructor, roughly once a month since my hair is color treated. I moisturize and seal with a grapeseed & sweet almond oil from ORS. Miss Jessie’s Transitioner’s Magic is definitely a Transitioner’s best friend! I use it for braid outs, twists outs, and even my perm rod sets.

Anything else you would like to add?

Each girl’s hair journey is her own. Have fun with it, experiment, don’t be afraid of mistakes. Love your hair at every phase, and on everyday!
