1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey. (Name, where you’re from, etc) My name is Keyera (Miss Afrodite) Mitchell and I am from Phoenix, AZ. For most of my life I grew up in an all-white neighborhood and I tended schools that were majority white. For years I wanted to have long straight hair and I was ashamed of my curls. It took me 16 years to finally accept my hair for what it was.
2. How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls? I have been natural for nineteen out of my 20 years of living. My freshman year of high school I got a relaxer to loosen my curls, so my hair would appear longer which was a HUGE mistake! I never did that again. Unfortunately, I have not always embraced my natural hair, but now I am in love with my luscious locs and I thank God for blessing me with my curls.
3. What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why? I was motivated to transition as soon as I seen all the damage that the relaxer did to my hair. I realized that the “creamy crack” method was not the way to go and I needed to start from scratch and just grow my hair naturally.
4. How would you describe your hair? I would describe my hair as an “Afrodisiac” I feel as though my hair is embraced by a lot of men especially men outside my race. I definitely have learned that natural hair is sexy hair.
5. What do you love most about your hair? I love that my hair makes me look like a lion and has so much volume, I cannot stand flat hair and my voluminous locs fit my personality.
6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?! The most memorable part of my journey was when I was in my history class my junior year of high school and we were discussing the 70s era and my teacher pointed me out in the middle of class and said my afro was beautiful. Being natural has been both easy and difficult because although I love my hair I get impatient when it comes to growing it out.
7. What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’ I love a curly fauxhawk and I love wearing my hair down and proud representing my afro.
8. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others? My overall experience of being natural has been phenomenal and my family and friends love it. I started a YouTube channel and I have support from friends at my college and my aunts, parents, and cousins who tune in each week to view my videos.
9. What is your hair regimen (including fav products)? My hair regimen is actually quite simple. After washing my hair I section it and apply my favorite products Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Eden Body Works All Natural Curl Defining Crème. When I’m done sectioning I finger stretch my curls when they are about eighty percent dry and I go to sleep on a satin pillowcase, so I can wake up the few days looking flawless like Beyoncé!
10. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs? I love Curly Nikki she inspired me to blog about natural hair and my favorite YouTubers are Taren Guy, the Glam Twinz, Mahogany Curls, and Sun Kiss Alba.
11. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words? I want the readers to know that it is not a bad thing to dare to be different. Embrace your hair and work with what you have! Black hair is good hair!
