Naturally Fierce Feature: Tiffany Nichols

Hello, I am Tiffany Nichols of TiffanyNicholsDesign. I am a 30 year old “Natural Hair Enthusiast” from OKC, OK. I work fulltime and I love to blog and vlog to help uplift, educate, and promote the beauty of natural hair. I embarked on my natural hair journey in June 2009 and have not looked back on my relaxed days since. That was the best decision I could have made for my hair. My hair has never been thicker, healthier, stronger, or longer.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural a little over 3 years.

What motivated you to go natural?
I decided to return back to natural after first discovering YouTube and the many beautiful ladies that were sharing their hair journey with the world. I learned what transitioning was, what a big chop was, and how to maintain your hair during both phases. After watching tons of videos and doing my own leg work, by researching the benefits of being natural, hair products, ingredients, etc…I finally made up my mind that I was ready to stop relaxing my hair. I received my last relaxer in June 2009 and transitioned for 9 months, doing my bc in March 2010. I chose to transition because I was accustomed to having long hair and I didn’t think I would be comfortable nor did I think I had the confidence to rock extremely short hair.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?
The journey started off being a little difficult but like with anything that you go though in life or that you have a passion for it becomes easier to do and manage over time. I think that learning my hair and learning to love my hair have been the most memorable part of my journey. I had to learn to understand my hair and figure out what products and ingredients work best for my hair. Boy did that come with a price!! All that money spent on products that didn’t work for my hair. *side eye*!! But, I think that part is important and all naturals go through that product sampling phase. Learning to love my hair was another memorable part, because that is when I starting accepting my hair for what it was and all the many different textures that it was made up of. I really began to appreciate the hair that I was blessed with and understood that it was one of a kind!

What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
My favorites transitiong hairstyles were bantu knot-outs, flexi-rod sets, buns, and braid-outs. Those styles helped me blend both the natural hair with the relaxed hair and were pretty low maintaince styles, because they would last me all week.

I love the bun so I asked Tiffany to share a tutorial with us! Yea! (Click image below)

What is your hair regimen?
My current routine is pretty simple. I mainly co-wash my hair instead of using shampoo. I will co-wash at least once a week and shampoo my hair maybe once every 4-6 weeks. I found that co-washing allows me to keep my hair moisturized, by not stripping my hair like shampoo does and it still gets my hair and scalp clean. My conditioner of choice is Herbal Essence’s Hello Hydration Conditioner or Tresemme Naturals Radiant Volume Conditioner. When I shampoo my hair I use Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo. I will first put my hair into 4 workable sections and proceed to wash my hair one section at a time. After I am finished with each section apply my conditioner, detangle my hair and let the conditioner sit for about 10 mins. I will rinse it out one section at a time and then squeeze the excess water out. I will then use a cotton shirt to absorb any extra water. Next, I will apply my leave in which is Paul Mitchelle’s The Conditioner to each section and then I will apply my Moisture Butter or Curling Smoothie to my hair to add moisture. I will then apply an oil to seal it all in. My oils of choice are either Sweet Almond or Grapeseed Oil. I will then two strand twist my hair doing 3-4 twists in each section depending on the look I want. I will let the twists sit overnight. Lastly, I untwist my hair, separate with Coconut Oil on my hands, and fluff. My hair always looks moisturized and is defined when I do my twist out. That is my favorite go to hairstyle.

(I love this pic of you!)

Any memorable reactions from family or others since going natural?
I have had a wonderful experience as a natural and for the most part everyone has been accepting of my hair. Some of my family and friends were surprised and felt like I might have been going through a crisis of some sort when I told them I was going natural. However, I did have many people in my corner who were very supportive and encouraging with my decision to return back to natural; one being my husband, who never said anything negative throughout my journey.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?
I really like CurlyNikki.com, HappilyEverNatural.com, NaturallyCurlly.com, & BlackGirlsLongHair.com. A few of my favorite YouTubers are MyNaturalsSistas, Naptural85, Prec13, and Mrskw7.
