It’s traditional with an edge and … [Read more...]

“I DON’T LIKE MY NATURAL TEXTURE. SO WHAT?”

Sigh, I’m not sure if I’m truly ready to answer this question. This question is teetering in the back of the minds of many newbie naturals as they take the next step into their natural hair journey. It’s even in the relaxed woman’s mind as she weighs the decision to finally stop relaxing. It’s also in the mind of the natural who has been struggling with her new texture for styles and acceptance of her peers. Must all women with curly and coily hair accept and love her tresses? We live in an … [Read more...]

Are You Saving More Money Now That Are You Are Natural?

Even though I would like to hear your thoughts on this, I understand this is a question that I can only answer from a personal standpoint. I think the best way to answer it is with a simple comparison on how much I spent prior to going natural and now. I don’t think it’s fair to ask a new natural this question because back when I just went natural I spent TONS of money on different products trying to find my holy grail. But now, I’m pretty content with my stash and can say I’m no longer … [Read more...]

One Word Whip: Natural Hair in One Word

During these 6 day leadership conferences I work 12+ hours a day and I don't have time to do my hair every morning so I kept my hair twisted up in some sort of protective style but toward the end the conference and as a treat for myself I "let my hair down" so to speak. I untwist my hair and rock my big fluff. This picture shows how I wore my hair on the last 2-3 days of the conference. This was to let it breath before wash day.I received so many comments from my scholars when they saw my hair … [Read more...]

Naturally Fierce Feature: Onika

My name is Onika Henry and I am an intentional student, from Trinidad and Tobago, studying for an M.Ed Human Sexuality degree in the USA. I’ve always wanted to be natural, especially since relaxers were such a stressful experience for me - I would often get bad chemical burns on my scalp if I didn’t treat it with some kind of protective cream at least a week before. Relaxing my hair was really done because I didn’t know how to care for and style my hair, not that I was really interested in … [Read more...]

Embracing Natural Hair for the Little Natural

When I was a little girl, about 10 years old, I remember watching TV with my mother when a Pantene Pro V commercial came on. The women on my TV screen were beautiful with thick, straight, and shiny hair that seemed to constantly flow over their shoulders. In my little girl mind, these women were so beautiful because Pantene Pro V magically transformed their strands from dull and frizzy to straight and full of life. I remember going to my mother later that day and asking her…no begging her … [Read more...]

I would describe my style as evolving, especially right now as I’m noticing a change in items I’m gravitating to and purchasing. It’s weird to admit it, but my style is starting to become a little more grown up, which I’m actually finding to be very exciting and I’m so happy I have the blog to document that growth process. … [Read more...]

Daddy Did My Hair

On a typical morning my family will get dressed and eat breakfast, after which my husband will brush my son’s hair and I will style my daughters’ hair. Well, a few days ago I had to leave for work before everyone else, so I did not have time for my girls’ hair. When I came home from work that day both of my daughters had new hairstyles. It didn’t look bad, just different from how I would have chosen to style it. My older daughter bounced over to me with the brightest smile and said, “Daddy did … [Read more...]

Naturally Fierce Feature: Lakeseia

Hello! My name is Lakeseia and I currently reside in Jacksonville, Florida. My natural hair journey began approximately 2.5 years (and some change) ago and haven’t looked back ever since. My interest was sparked in 2010 while wearing micro braids, which I kept in for 2 months (which was a long time for me). During this time I was able to see a glimpse of my natural hair texture at my roots which, is probably the first time I’ve seen my texture in years since I was relaxed at 7 years old. How … [Read more...]
