Naturally Fierce: Devyn Rose

My name is Devyn Rose and I am a musician from NYC!

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for 10 months now!!

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

My sister Karen went natural about 2 years ago (see our photo together!) and inspired me to go for it 10 months ago – that in addition to the hell I went through. In August 2012, I cut my hair (see haircut photo). About a week later, I went to the hairdresser to put a color in, and then 4 weeks later I put a perm in myself. When I washed the perm out, a lot of my hair fell out/chopped off – it was like I was in a horror movie. I’ve always colored my hair and permed but I guess because I didn’t wait at least 2 months in between, this happened to me. Thank God I still had a lot of hair left, although about 4 different sections of my hair was chopped off. At first, I kept fighting with myself, like should I do the big chop, or just deal with my chopped damaged hair, which by the way was hell at first …I didn’t know how I would look with a boy cut so I decided to deal with my already damaged hair…10 months later, my hair has grown so much and is much healthier. While I still have some repairing to do, I am happy with how it’s coming out and I love my natural hair texture!

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?  Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

At first, it was really difficult. Combing through my new growth and trying to roller set it was so tough..I also couldn’t figure out hairstyles that I actually liked and that I had the patience to do…as time passes, it gets easier and easier for me. Sometimes I sit back and think why I ever put a perm in my hair, like I really love my waves!

What  were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
These are a few styles I wear on a daily basis – my sis taught me how to do the curly ones. I am always searching for more – thank God for youtube right?!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?

It’s been pretty good, my friends seemed pretty excited after I decided to go natural, especially my sister because she started the whole natural thing in the family. Oh and by the way, I’ve noticed that guys LOVE natural hair 😀

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I co-wash every 3-4 days and I fully wash once a month. I either twist my hair or blow-dry it out and flat iron it using a heat protector. I use Tresemme Naturals, Bee Mine, Shea Moisture, and when my sister is around I sneak and use her Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding…I haven’t brought Miss Jessie’s yet because it’s so expensive but I plan on buying my own since it lasts really long and makes my hair really soft.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?

My favs are http://www.curlynikki.com/and http://www.naturalhairloveaffair.com/… Youtube favs are: http://www.youtube.com/user/Naptural85,  http://www.youtube.com/user/SimplYounique
