Hello my name is Takiyah Burgess everyone calls me “TJ”. I live in Charlotte NC. I was a military brat born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma and of course I married a military man. I am 39 years old with a 19 year old daughter, but everyone thinks we are sister!! Lol!!
How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for a 2 ½ years and loving it!!
What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
I was so tired of hiding behind hair extensions & the damage it was causing to my hair. I big chopped in Jan 2011 because I felt that was the best way to start my journey & to be able to learn how to take care of my hair.
What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?
The most memorable part of my journey is just falling in love with my kinks & curls. To see my curl pattern was just amazing. I love the versatility of my natural hair. It has been a challenge. The awkward stages of hair growth, thinking my hair is not growing and the trials & error. I once straighten my hair for about a week which caused severe heat damage and I had to cut several inches of my hair off. I learned the hard way that it’s more important to have healthy hair instead of a head full of damage hair. Educating yourself about how to take care of your natural hair is a must.
What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
My favorite & go to style are twistouts. I just think this style is so cute & sassy. Plus it’s the style I have mastered. Lol!!
What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others? Learning how to take care of my hair has been an experience. I am so grateful for YouTube, Facebook, Instragram and blogs. I get so much inspirational from the natural hair community. It has been great. I love the complement’s I get and sometimes the stares too. The reaction I get from most people is positive. I also convinced my daughter to go natural. She comes up with the most creative styles.
What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
My favorite products are Shea Moisture Curl Enhance Smoothie, Kinky Curly & Herbal Essence Hello Hydration and several different types of oils. I started with these products & stuck with them. They have not let me down yet. I am also a new subscriber to Curlbox which I am loving all the sample products. It’s an easy way for me to try new products.
What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?
There are so many fabulous bloggers and YourTuber’s it’s hard to pick. Some of my favorites are Kinky Curly Coily Me, Curly Nikki, My Natural Sista’s and IKnowlee.
