Naturally Fierce Feature: Kirsten

My name is Kirsten, i am 24 years old and im from Jersey. Lived in jersey all my life and proud of being a jersey girl 🙂 I have always had very thick curly hair due to my mixed background. My mom is half white and half black and my dad is black but just was born with curly hair so i get it from both parents.

How long have you been natural?  

I started wearing my curls naturally for almost a year now. I used to hate my curls just because I felt like it was just too much all over, the curly afro was too big, and i just couldnt figure out how 2 control them. And i also used to perm my hair, bad idea, so my curls werent really “curls” for a long time. I had 2 let the perm grow out and get my hair trimmed every now and then.

What motivated you to transition?
What motivated me to keep my curls out and natural for awhile was the idea of it being alot more healthy and im in the process of trying to let it grow more as well.

How would you describe your hair?
My hair is is very thick and must be wet in order to manage it but my curls are sort of tight but bouncy.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love the fact i can wet it, add a little product to it and go .. Dont really have 2 worry about styling it when its out in my curly fro. It styles itself in a way.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
The most memorable part of it would just getting the curls back to its normal health .. It was difficult beacause I wanted to straighten it and add color but I had 2 discipline myself and refrain from doing that in order to keep it healthy.

What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
I love wearing it out and wild, but there are those days I throw it up in a bun.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
Everyone loves my hair out and curly now. They say i should never straighten it again lol. But i probably will anyway.. Just for my birthday or something.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
My hair regimen is pretty simple. I wash and condition with Shea Moisture products, section my hair off and use shea moisture hair soufflé and mixed chicks leave in conditioner in each section and let it air dry.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?…… My favorite curly girl is Jade, her instagram name is @lipstickncurlyhair. She also has good youtube videos.
