Double Fierce Feature: Bevin & Alayna

Our names are Bevin & Alayna. We are both natives of Richmond, VA. We are best friends and also blog partners to Hole In Jean Pocket.

How long have you been natural?
We have both been natural for about 2 years now. Alayna grew her hair out over a course of time with protective styles like rods, roller sets and twist outs. I however, decided to “big chop”, which was a long and stressful road back to recovery!

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
Alayna: What motivated me to transition was the versatility of natural hair gave. I wanted to be able to do different looks and styles. There so much you can do having natural hair in comparison to relaxed hair.

Bevin: I decided to big chop ultimately for the health of my hair. During High school I made the decision to perm and color my hair and since then had experienced terrible breakage and slow growth. I tried transitioning but could not deal with the texture difference. It was a spontaneous decision to cut all my hair off and start fresh, but glad I made the choice!

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?
It is safe to say that our journey has had its ups and downs. Of course not every style tutorial you find on Youtube for natural hair can be achieved with your hair texture and that’s the challenging part—-knowing what works for you and what doesn’t. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve taken styling ideas from other naturalistas that have just totally proved to be a waste of time for us. As side from all our failed styling attempts, our journey has been rewarding. Our hair is the healthiest its ever been!

What are  some of your favorite hairstyles?
Both of us love to rock the ‘pineapple’ !! It’s a simple style that can be rocked with many looks, whether you’re dressed up or dressed down, it works for almost any occasion and requires little effort at all to achieve or maintain. We also like to wear curly fros and rodded styles (especially with oversized hoops!)

Any memorable reactions from family or others since gong natural?
Bevin: When I first “big chopped” my family’s initial reaction was of shock. I don’t think my grandfather or dad really cared for my short look. My friends however, loved it on me. The harder part came as it started to grow out…that’s my only disclaimer about “big chopping”—the growing process can sometimes be a stressor.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
We both use similar products. We definitely keep tons of conditioner on deck, TRESemme Naturals & Herbal Essence Hello Hydration are definite favs. For styling we use Shea Moisture products, Taliah Waajid Curly Cream, Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curl, Carols Daughter hair care line.
We try sticking with products that will constantly moisturize our hair. A side from those products we also use the Huetiful Hair Steamer and home remedy hot oil treatments to pamper our roots and ends.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
Our all time favorite would have to be Taren Guy! We love her, she’s such an inspirational person and her fro rocks!
