Hello my natural sistas, let’s talk about dating. Yes, that big d word that every girl wants by 16, but doesn’t really understand till 30 lol.

Since I’ve been natural, I have experienced prejudice and praise in the dating world. Some men love it, while others hate it, but it is one story that sticks out the most. So listen to this ( you might want to pull up a chair cause this is extremely juicy) around this time last year, I decided to get a tapered fro to celebrate my nappiversary.

Now I always have been a fan of short hair styles; I mean its just hair it’ll grow back. Well my boyfriend at the time thought different, when I told him about my plans he flipped out. All I kept hearing was ” You’re not a boy”, “I don’t date short hair girls”, “Are you gay or something” like WOW!! Really?!?!. I was in total shock, disbelief I couldn’t believe the man I was starting to fall in love with had such a bias against short hair, but that wasn’t it. He went on to describe that if my hair was relaxed or a loser curl pattern, I could do it. Umm, no sir! I was extremely disgusted, for one I would never perm my hair again and two I love my 4c kinky hair, so I wasn’t changing for anyone.
Now where I was lost at was the fact he met me as a natural, a 4c natural. So why was my kinky hair such an issue?

I’ve always been the person to what makes me happy, so I cut my hair *shrugs*. Boom! I post pictures on instagram and I get a text of him flipping out, he basically told me I looked like a boy and I was ugly. Wow, right.

Just wait the plot thickens, so a few days after I decided to do a braid out and posted the pictures on IG. All of a sudden my comments blow up, it’s my boyfriend claiming how much he loves it, blah blah blah. I wasn’t giving sighs of release because I knew it was a motive coming. That night we talk and he explains that the curl pattern my braid out gave was the look he wanted me to keep.
I just looked like “you ain’t seen nothing yet.”

See I had decided just to go straight 90’s and get a high top fade, so that weekend I did. Fast forward two weeks later and you guessed it, me and my boyfriend broke up.

 

Was I sad? Yes, because I really did love him. Did I regret it? No, because no matter what I have to deal with myself, I have to look myself in the mirror. If it was real love he wouldn’t let a haircut change us. Now fast forward a year later and I big chopped my hair again, difference is this time my new boyfriend loves it. I never felt more confident and I know true love. 🙂 #PeaceLoveHair
