Naturally Fierce Feature: Aevin Dugas AKA Guinness Book Record Holder for the Largest Afro in the World

My name is Aevin Dugas, I’m from Napoleonville La and I work with women with mental retardation for the past 17 years. I wanted anymore.

How long have you been natural?
I went natural 14 yrs ago because I decided that permanently altering my hair wasn’t what I wanted/

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
Well at that time I was a “struggler”! Lol, I just knew I didn’t want chemicals and would have m best friend braid my hair and I’d rod it until 1 day I didn’t feel like setting it so I cut it off. But this may have been almost a year into growing it out.

How would you describe your hair?
My hair is versatile, soft, sexy at times, defiant at times (lol) but overall I would not change 1 thing about it!!

What do you love most about your hair?
I love the versatility of it and the health compared to when I had a relaxer.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?
Actually when I cut it because it was such a shock back then!! Of course the Guinness title but mostly when I finally cut it.

Has your hair journey been easy, difficult, or both?!
BOTH!! At times it was so hard, I tried 5 times to go natural before I finally did it!! But it was well worth the wait!!

What are  some of your favorite hairstyles?
I used to rod set it then pull the curls loose with Pink Lotion and slick the front back and make it look like a fro!! Loved that style, but unfortunately camera phones weren’t in and if they were they weren’t popular so I don’t have many pics from back then.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
Yes, my family loved it except 1 cousin who tried to say my hair was in lack of better words “un- Christian” like. I know it’s like O_o but yeah. My friends all loved it and overall everyone was very supportive.

Did you set out to achieve the largest afro in the world?
Girl nooooooo, I went natural because I was tired of chemicals, chemical burns, etc. The Guinness record  came about because my sister put up a picture and someone suggested I try out for the “World’s Largest Afro.” I almost didn’t do it, but I said “what the heck” and now here I am!!

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
My regimen is very simple. Shampoo, condition and wear in a protective style sun-thurs then on Friday and Saturday I’ll let it down. As far as products I’m an OTC girl. Anything cheap and safe of course I’ll try it!

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
Honestly, I don’t have any because I’m JUST starting to get familiar with them. You have to understand there wasn’t any of that back then so I was on my own. Other than my mama giving me fro tips and watching old 70’s flicks for hairstyles I was on my own. I have seen 1 called naptural85 and her hair is beautiful and reminds me of mine so I’ve tried two of her techniques and liked it.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
PATIENCE. Remember someone’s hair can look exactly like yours but you’ll try their products and they may not work. Just trial and error and don’t worry about length worry about health and I’ve time length will come if cared for properly.
