Naturally Fierce Feature: Ashley

Hey guys, my name is Marilyn Newbold, but I go by Ashley. I am from the beautiful islands of The Bahamas. Born and raised in Freeport, Grand Bahama. I am currently in South Carolina for school.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural 9 life changing months.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
I was defiantly a transitioner. I transitioned because before I decided to go natural I got a bob hair cut where I had a bang in the front and it was really short in the back. So I wanted my hair to grow out a lot more before I decided to chop my hair. I transitioned for 10 months. I wanted to go a year but I was just so excited to start my natural journey.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?  Has it been easy or difficult or both?!

It has defiantly not been the easiest. Some days come where I really don’t feel like doing my hair. I sometimes dread wash days because it’s so much to be done, because if I want my hair to look a certain way I have to follow a certain routine for that hair style. But it has gotten a lot easier. I may only be 9 months in but I have learned so much about my hair. So I guess I can say it has been both difficult and easy. 🙂

What  were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
My favorite transitioning hairstyles were defiantly Senegalese twist & Kinky twist. I kept them in my hair all through my transitioning process.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
A memorable part I can say has to be when my friends and family members come to me and ask me questions about going natural or what products should I buy“Ashley you have to come with my shopping for hair products”. I am now a guru amongst them and I love it. I am also the hairstylist to my little cousin’s hair when I am home in The Bahamas. I big chopped my little sister hair in April and I also big chopped my cousins hair in May. The reaction I got from my family members has been great! Everyone is now on their own journeys. The ones that don’t want to go natural they are now on a healthy hair journey, getting their hair back on track. My family is the best!

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
My hair regimen consists of deep condition twice a month. Co-wash when ever my hair feels a little bit to dry. Shampoo if my hair is crazy itchy (dirty) lol. A deep condition day consists of: Pre poo, Shampoo-Rinse out conditioner, Deep condition, LOC method (African Pride Shea butter miracle leave in conditioner, Oils to seal the moisture and whichever styling cream I want to use. Lately I have been loving the Motions “Naturally You” define my curls crème. This is the regimen I built so far no problems J

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, You Tuber’s, or blogs?

My favorite natural hair websites would have to be naturallycurly.com and kinkykurlysistas.com. My favorite YouTuber’s hands down are Naptural85, Au Curls Naturally and QueenTeshna. I love to watch these ladies. I am learning so much from them.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
The journey might get hard sometimes but when you look in the mirror and actually love who’s looking back at you, you know that you made the right decision! Your hair doesn’t define who you are but it damn sure makes you feel and look better! I have this saying “all things cutesy all things bold”. This means try new things with your hair. Don’t conform yourself to one look. Keep it cute always and be BOLD!
