Naturally Fierce Feature: Brandi AKA thikandkurly

Brandi “thikandkurly” Turpin from Raleigh, nc. May 26, 2007 I big chopped and have loved and embraced every minute. I simply craved something new and different. My brother had curly hair so I figured I would cut the relaxer to see if I did too!

How long have you been natural? 6 years!

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I big chopped because I’m very impatient lol. I made my mind up and just cut it all off! Also I wanted to see how the short look looked on me.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?
When I straightened my hair and realized it was longer than it had EVER been with a relaxer. My journey has been both. I LOVE my natural hair; however have like others experienced moments of insecurity and frustration. Insecurity because of society’s views on nappy hair. Frustrated due to shrinkage and slow growth.

What are some of your favorite  hairstyles?
I currently I absolutely LOVE flat twist outs. I like two strand twist outs as well, altought they take longer to complete. Both looks give me that wild, soft flowing curl feel!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
May 26, 2007 my parents just so happened to be driving thru my current city. Of course I asked them to stop by. My father looked as if he saw a ghost. My mother screamed “I love it!”. Unfortunately It seems to me that Caucasians complement and verbally admire my hair more than African Americans.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
Lol hummmmmm, I wash or co wash approximately once every 1-2 weeks. I apply moisture DAILY via midst bottle. My favorite gel for a wash n go is clear ice; however my favorite gel for puffs and buns is Eco styler Moroccan oil. Komaza care hair lotion is AWESOME!

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
Beautiful brown baby doll, taren guy, urban bush babes

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
BE PATIENT and embrace every moment of your journey. Wear your natural hair because YOU want to. Being a naturalista is invigorating. The feeling of freedom and not confirming are amazing.

Additionally: I love being natural now that working out is a part of my lifestyle. I never worry about sweating.
