I will be 4 years natural on August 7th, 2013. Whoooo!
What motivated you to go natural? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
I remember I was waiting for my mom to come home so she could relax my hair. I went on YouTube, in search of a possible hair style I could do next. While looking, I came across a video about somebody’s natural hair journey- I absolutely loved it! My mom came home, asking if I was ready to relax my hair and I said, “No, I’m going natural!” I started researching about natural hair every day that summer and I big chopped August 7, 2009 (2 weeks before my sophomore yr. in high school).
What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
The most memorable part of my journey was the first year. So many people thought I was crazy and weird for cutting off all my hair. It was difficult at first, but it pushed me to love myself inside and out.
What were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
While transitioning, the only thing I did were bantu knots and buns. I didn’t want to mess with my hair too much.
Any memorable reactions from family or others since going natural?
So far my experiences have been great. Like I said, when I first started, it was rocky but I truly loved my hair. My family and friends supported me from the very beginning. I even encouraged about a 10 people and my mother to go natural!
What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I’m in my first year of college, so my regimen has changed. I shampoo and condition my hair once a month, co-wash twice a month, and moisturize almost every day. My staples are Herbal Essence Hello Hydration shampoo and conditioner (blue bottle), Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Jamaican locking gel, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner, and most importantly water!
