Naturally Fierce Feature: Danielle

My name is Danielle and I’m from Inglewood California. I’ve lived all over America from Kansas City to Philadelphia. I’m probably the biggest nerd you’ll ever meet. I consider myself a modern day Ms. Frizzle since I am a science teacher and biologist.

How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural all my life, except about a two year stint with perm starting my junior year of high school. I begged my mom for a perm because I wanted to do my own hair (Mistake #1) and I thought it would be “easier” to manage (Mistake #2). To make matters worse, I had gotten auburn highlights for my 16th birthday because I thought I was Beyoncé. High school was the time I thought I could take care of my hair myself and CLEARLY I could not.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

I wanted something different when I started college. I was sooooooooooooo tired of perms, although I would get them like every three months. My curls were very damaged and I suffered from some breakage as well so I decided to grow my perm out and embrace my curls. I was the Queen of the braidout in college my freshman and sophomore years.

What has been the most memorable part of the journey?

Probably just watching my hair grow and my curls start to act right again lol. Although it has taken some time, the journey has been pretty easy, because I’m just a “get up and go” kind of girl…SHAKE…FLIP…REPEAT (and stash a couple bobby pins because you never know where the wind will take you).

What are some of your favorite hairstyles?

I LOVE me a bun because I live in Vegas and that 120 degree weather ain’t nothing to mess with. And nobody has time to walk around with a hair blanket on their back. Most days, I do just like to go free and just stick a flower in my hair and go. Currently, I love “pin-up” style hairdos and when I have about 3,457,775 bobby pins lying around, I try to pull it off. When I was transitioning, I was all about buns and box braids.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’

Being natural and having big hair has forced me out of my shell a bit because I am a very shy person. My hair definitely brings me attention to say the least, but I’ve learned to rock with it. My mom also wears her hair big and curly and BLONDE. So if she can be fierce, I might as try to be too.

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I have used Creame of Nature products all my life and I’ve stuck to it. I used to be a SERIOUS product junkie, but learned that all things for curls, may not be for my curls. I wash my hair every two weeks or once a month. I use Creame of Nature replenishing conditioner with Argan Oil.  Then I use Shea Moisture Leave in Conditioner and leave it in all day (sometimes all night).  I moisturize my hair with Jamaican castor oil and coconut oil every other day and I simply put my hair in two or four braids at night… Pretty simple regimen because I’m always on the go.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?

I am a NEW FAN OF Global Couture!  Naptural85  is probably my favorite youtuber.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

Just embrace who you are. Don’t compare yourself to anybody whether it be another’s hair or finances. Although hair care can be fun and an awesome form of self-expression, make sure you take care of what’s under the mane- The Mind.  Always walk with humility and kindness…. Just nourish your mind and soul with positivity. Cherish joy.
