Naturally Fierce Feature: Kimberly Nettles

I am Kimberly Nettles, a pharmacy student currently attending Florida A&M University. I am originally from Mobile, Alabama and have started a natural hair care line with my mom, Dr Nettles Natural Beauty. As I progress in my hair journey, I find myself gravitating towards simple and easy ways to keep my hair looking the best it can possible be.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural my entire life. However natural doesn’t equate to health; and I’ve been on a healthy hair (and body) journey for about 4 years now. That includes clean eating with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and wearing my hair in protective styles to prevent as much unnecessary damage as possible.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I started taking better care of my hair when I noticed I was experiencing breakage and split ends. I started researching how to obtain stronger, longer hair, and it opened my mind to a multitude of new techniques and styles.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
It has been challenging, but enjoyable! The most memorable part is seeing the outcome of you hair. Once you experience shiny, longer locks, it makes all the previous hard work of deep conditionings and hot oil treatments extremely rewarding.

What are some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos?’
Bantu knots were my go to technique! I would put them in at night and the style would last two to three days. Now, I love twist outs and braid outs! It’s so simple and a great protective hair style that looks amazing when you take it out!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
It’s all love. It’s a style statement in my eyes, and is as much a part of my look as what shoes I’m wearing, or what dress I put on. Also, since natural hair is becoming much more mainstream, its not uncommon to see other women rocking curly hair!

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I currently use Dr Nettles Beauty products. They are 100% organic and natural products created for overall hair health, growth, and restoration! My mother (a pharmacist)and I created the products when we realized how many harsh chemicals are found in everyday beauty products! I recommend anyone experiencing damaged hair to try our products (www.drnettlesbeauty.com).

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
I love HeyFranHey! She not only has great natural hair tips, but overall health and body posts too. Beauty starts from the inside out, so it’s awesome to see someone encouraging others to live a healthy lifestyle.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
Beauty is such an individualized concept. When you see others with natural hair that looks amazing (in your perspective), never get upset or try to compare yourself to them. Play around with different styles and find out what works for you- build your own sense of style and beauty according to what makes you feel your absolute best!
