Naturally Fierce Feature: Melissa

I’m Melissa Wilmore from Lancaster, SC. A very small county in between Columbia SC and Charlotte NC.

How long have you been natural?

July 3rd of 2013 made 3 years that I have been natural!!!!

What motivated you to go natural? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?

I love highlights, low lights or any type of color so that along with my relaxed hair became a problem. I also got in a bad habit of flat ironing my hair every week. That became stressful on my hair and it began to break off. So that started my journey. I chose to transition because I experienced a short hair cut before on my relaxed hair and I didn’t like. I just decided to let it grow and cut it gradually.

How would you describe your hair?
My hair is extremely thick. I would describe it as 3C curly coily. I have a very good curl pattern so it doesn’t take a lot of product for defining.

What do you love most about your hair?
What I love the most about my hair is the texture. I love the way my puff balls look when I go for that look.

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?
My most memorable stage about being natural was how many times I thought about getting a relaxer. Through out the first 4 to 6 months I constantly thought about that. I’m so glad I stuck through it. That first year I would say is hard then it begins to get easier as time goes.

What  were some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles?
7. While transitioning I wore many rod sets, Senegalese twist and sew-ins.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?
My 3 years has been GREAT! I wouldn’t trade it in for a relaxer. I enjoyed sleeping in a little longer for awhile with my natural hair. As of now my makeup application replaces that. Lol

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

I normally try to wash my hair on Saturdays or Sundays with Jane Carter moisturizing shampoo. I normally follow up with a spray leave in conditioner by Jane Carter as well. I also use Jane Carter curl creme to do any twist outs or styles. I use Mizani Supreme oil for shine.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites, YouTuber’s, or blogs?

I don’t really have too many favorite bloggers or You tube gurus but I do love msdanti. She has a you tube and a IG account as well. Mz_Tammy on IG has a lot of beautiful styles as well. There are a few more but those are my two favorites right now.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?

I encourage everyone that desires to go natural to do so. It may be challenging but its worth it all. The Best Of Both Worlds.
