I’ve always been natural, I never used any chemicals to change my hair texture even though I did want to, but instead I just embraced my hair at the age of 12. Reading a post of one of my friends who always talked about going natural got me all curious. One day I got sick of the same old hairstyle, so I went looking for someone with my type of hair and texture. I needed a new hair routine and that’s when I saw all these video’s about natural hair. I wanted to know more about the hype and I that’s when I found Taren916 on youtube. I’ve been a fan ever since.
I don’t really consider myself a transition-er but I used to cut my own hair out of frustration. Because of the frizzy-ness after dying my hair or heat damage, man, I’d get so frustrated with my hair.
I went to a hair stylist last year in September to get ready for a big cut because I thought my hair was more than dead, calling it zombie-hair. She analyzed my hair and she told me that all I had was split ends and my so called big chop was less than 2 inches… I have very long hair now and right now it lacks a good shape. So I will cut it myself!
What was it like to be a kid with natural hair?
Cruel kids! Oh man even though I had beautiful hair, a few black kids in my school bullied me to the point where I just wanted to have short hair so bad. It’s funny that the same girls that bullied me back then, now buy that Brazilian or Indian virgin hair to have what I have. I was happy though, because around that time the movie Austin Powers Goldmember came out and Beyonce was rocking this big honey blond Afro. It inspired me as a kid. I dyed my hair all kinds of colors. In high school I was obsessed with Japanese Animation, so I wanted to look like a cartoon figure. After pink, purple, green, blue & being a ginger for a while, oh lord well, I feel so lucky that I haven’t turned bald!
What are some of your favorite hairstyles?
I love to put my hair in all kinds of buns. They have to be high, really high! Sometimes my buns are fluffy because with two kids I can’t always find the time to let my hair down without feeling like an electrocuted sheep. Most of the time I keep my hair in buns because right now my hair is long and shapeless. It looks good when it’s straight but I want my fro back! Sometimes I do big twists but the results ain’t always pretty.
Any memorable reactions from family or others?
Most of my family members love my hair. My friends love my hair and even strangers compliment me on my hair. Overall good experiences! “I want your hair” is one of the things I hear a lot but I have to be honest. My frizzy type of hair takes hours. I hate my washing routine because it gives me stiff arms, an achy neck and a messed up water-bill. Sometimes I do secretly wish for straight hair.
What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I don’t really have regimens for my hair but I do try to avoid products with alcohol. I have frizzy hair and the best products for my hair are cream-based. Last month I thought I found heaven! I now use Moroccan argon oil. I will use hair masks to condition my hair every week because summertime equals frizzy times. Biological coconut milk and Shea butter are on my list as well. My problem with products is that they stop working on my hair after a short amount of time. It’s like my search will never end. I need a night routine!
Any thoughts related to raising natural kids? I will never ever put chemicals in her hair and I’ll make sure I’ll raise her to embrace her beautiful curls.
I have a love and hate relationship with my hair. I have good hair days and second day hair and sometimes I’m lucky with an extra day. I feel like I have a lot of bad hair days, but it’s because I seriously need shape! I feel sexy with big hair. One of my friends always calls me Chaka Khan.
I use to adore Kelis, her hair resembles mine and the bright colors. I loved it but those days have faded I’m now infatuated with Taren Guy’s hair.
Taren Guy is my number one. I find www.blackgirllonghair.com useful and right now i’m still looking for other websites and blogs to inspire me! Anyone is free to contact me. i’ll read your blog, i’ll be your friend.
I will put up my own hair journey in a blog on my http://oehlalasuki.blogspot.nl/ Embrace your hair type and don’t envy the texture of others. You are beautiful! Be one with nature, be the way God created you. Beautiful.
