This topic is probably going to be a hot button for a while with everything going on in the world and I honestly do not know if I want to post my personal interpretation about the whole thing because if I am honest I am confused. When I came across the story I will admit that I never heard of Rachel Dolezal before and when the whole backstory came up with her name, I was perplexed.
For those that don’t know, the very basis’s of the story is that Rachel Dolezal the president of the Spokane Washington chapter of the NAACP, Africana Studies professor at Eastern Washington University and graduate from Howard Universityhas basically been portraying herself as an African American woman for years while in fact she is a Caucasian American woman.
And I am confused. I am confused as to why someone would claim to be someone that they are not. I am confused how someone could portray themselves as someone they are not (I mean literally how in this day and age). I am confused about how someone could portray themselves as someone they are not for years and not get called out sooner especially seeing as she wasn’t just little old Annie knitting sweaters pent up in her house with no contact with the outside world.
So I want to understand why?! Why would someone want to pretend for so long? I want to crawl into her mind and find out WHY?! Like I said this story just confuses the heck out of me.
From all the feedback I have seen there are different opinionsabout this bizarre story but there seems to be 4 common sentiments that can sort of be “grouped” together:
Now, like I mentioned I am confused about everything that has become public so far. I do not have an issue with the fact that she wants to stand up for the African American cause, work with the African American community, learn about the culture or even if she seems to have “identified” with the African American culture however, and this is a BIG however there is a BIG difference between identifying with something and impersonating/pretending to be someone you are not.
Okay I thought I wasn’t going dig into this but I can’t help it!I have an issue with the fact that 1. She lied. Plain and simple I see what she did as lying. I do not understand why someone would feel the need to lie about who she/he while working for a good cause. I do not understand why/how you would want to fight for something while lying to the people you are trying to help. The more people that fight for the cause the better but not when it is coated, created, developed and grown based in and around deception!
And 2. I want to know why! I cannot wrap my head about the simple explanation of “she loves the culture so much that she feels like she is African American”. That cannot simply be it. I literally just finished watching France24 (the French News in English) and I caught a snippet stating that Rachel apparently has said that she “loves the African culture and identifies with it” and that she is “Transracial”. Okay that is just…Loving something or feeling a certain way about something does not explain the fact that she made up a persona, denied who she is, rejected her true self.
Did she believe she could not have done all the work she did as herself? Because she did not have to be someone she is not to become president of the Spokane Washington chapter of the NAACP, to graduate from Howard University, to become aprofessor at Eastern Washington University. So why did she? Why make up stories of hate crimes (if in fact she did make them up, this is still unproven), she did not have to pretend that her adopted African American brothers are her sons, she did not have to pretend that her father is an African American man, she did not have to pretend! So again why?! Like I said identifying with something does not explain it or make it ok to lie and it also does not make it true or a fact.
Alright, to finish off a article that went into a rant that I didn’t want to dig into, my opinion is based on what has been presented currently and from what I have read I do not understand the story. Maybe once we hear from her properly we can get all the sides of the story but I don’t know if that will change my mind because a lie is a lie.Perhaps there is more to this story than is being told only time will tell.
Thoughts?
