Naturally Fierce Feature: Veneka Davis

 
 

My name is Veneka Davis and I am 32 years old. I am orginally from Jackson, MS and currently reside in Houma, LA. I am  the General Manager at ULTA Beauty in Houma and mother of two.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural THIS TIME for 2 yrs. LOL. I am on my 3rd natural hair journey! The first time was in 1997.

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
For my 30th bday i decided to grow my hair out, ive always been a short hair kinda girl so groung my hair out was taboo! i had great results however i was a slave to the flat iron & i had some ferocious split ends. i decided to get a lil trim & received a haircut that didn’t turn out the way i wanted. when i had relaxed hair, i would only relax about 4 times a yr, so i decided to just transition back natural, after that awful hair cut i just continued to trim away the relaxed & heat damaged ends & voila!

My very first journey, I Big Chopped (BC).  I BC’d in 97, after I saw Jada Pinkett Smith in the Movie ‘Set it Off.’  I was in love with her BC at the end of the movie.

The second time, I transitioned (2 yrs during both my pregnancies). P.S. My kids are 16 months apart! It felt like 2 yrs 🙂

Beginning this 3rd journey, I remembered how I loved fuller and healthier my hair from my previous journeys. I transitioned this time because I’m impatient!!! Lol

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?
Most memorable part of this journey is all the request to touch my hair (especially when I ‘fro it out’)
it’s been very easy, just a lot of maintenance… But so worth it!

What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos?
I love to fro my hair however it’s longer now & that fro is hot! Literally! Lol
(Currently) I am obsessed with a flat twistout & curl!!!

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
As a ‘natural,’ I feel more expressive! My relaxed hair was very plain & boring! ( I didn’t do extensions or weaves.)

My family loves it! My mother has been natural for years and she loves it too!

What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?

  • I typically shampoo once a week.
  • I DC every other shampoo ( organix Brazilian keratin).  I love how defined my curls are when I wash n go.
  • I am not a product hair junkie so my fav products are WATER, (very inexpensive) gel I get from family dollar, a curl creme from target call creme brûlée and redken natures rescue sea salt spray (it smells like heaven).
